p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon aps-c roll out a joke!!

I’ve just visited the canon website to see what rf-s lenses are currently available..
What a joke…
4 zooms, three with 6.3 max aperture the remaining one is 7.1.
No fast prime, no dedicated macro.

The original EF-s lens archive, whilst spartan did offer some nice glass as did the M system.

Do you think canon intends to add to the rf-s lens line up or are they assuming buyers will simply buy the FF glass, then later decide to move up to FF…Is that canons strategy??

The R50,, 10 & 7 ain’t cheap here in the UK, Why doesn’t canon create a proper aps-c mini eco system based around the aps-c sensor?

They should offer:-
15-45mm 2.8 IS STM (24-70)
45-135mm 2.8 IS STM (70-200)
15mm 1.4 (24)
30mm 1.4 (50)
85mm 1.4 (135)

That would be an amazing lens line up.
I would snatch every model. If I needed more then look to FF glass

As it stands, the system is a joke. Why would you buy a aps-c sensor then be forced to use FF glass that is twice the size and twice the weight it needs to be to cover the smaller sized sensor, where is the sense in that??

Unless they want to compete with Fujifilm — who have a very extensive set of purely APS-C lenses — at this point I don’t think Canon is going to give you what you want.

Back in the early days many people simply could not afford full frame, including serious photographers. So there were more lenses for these systems, including a few pretty good ones like the 16-55mm f/2.8. (Hope I’m identifying that one correctly.)

Sigma has (much of) what you want, or at least will have shortly. Looks like Canon has practically outsourced the creation of (good) APS-C lenses to Sigma now. :-)

If Canon did recreate an extensive line of RF-S lenses, they wouldn't sell well beyond a few budget kit lenses. Most people buy APS-C R series cameras for telephoto reach and gravitate towards the L telezooms and primes. I rarely remove the RF 100-400 from my R7. If you really want a small camera with small lenses there are plenty of choices with Fuji and micro 4/3.

I recently (last Christmas) bought into the Pentax system because I wanted a rugged small camera and lens that was fully weatherproof to use as a daily walkabout and not be affected by British weather.

That really opened my eyes..
The Pentax is way way behind Canon, Nikon in terms of AF. But the sensor and interface is leaps above canon aps-c DSLR’s.

I’ve accumulated quite a bit already. 4 limited primes (15.21,40 & 70) and two fast 2.8 zooms (16-55mm & 55-135mm) specifically designed for the aps-c sensor. The zooms are fully weather sealed and probably half the weight of canon FF equivalents. It’s not all rosy tho’. As mentioned the AF is shameful compared to canon, but what I’m getting at is as a system it’s much much more travel friendly than hauling around FF fast optics for canon aps-c bodies because there’s no alternatives

Just to add, I compared the K5iis to my 6d. The Pentax images were better, took more effort as canon is way too easy in comparison. But Pentax beat my FF 6d.

I’m now thinking of buying the k3iii, the joke is it’s more than the R8 or even the R7 and primitive in comparison, but the smaller lenses makes a huge difference and the sensor can deliver stunning images…but it takes more work.

I just don’t want the weight of FF glass no more, hence why I bought the entire canon M system (every body and lens) which canon decided to drop in favour of a much much more restrictive aps-c system.

Hope you can sense my frustration.
Love canon, but they seem determined to funnel everyone towards FF and L optics that spells bulk, weight and expense.

You are aware that the discontinued M system was the most popular camera canon sold?? Strange as it may seem normal people who don’t claim to be photographers yet still appreciate decent quality bought into the M system, it was a huge hit.

Hmmm, been thinking about this. I like the R7, layout, weight, features, no real complaints except perhaps faster readout speeds.

So lenses. Sigma's two new lenses, 10-18 and 18-50 f2.8 look really niece. (I have the 18-50 👍, and Digital Picture's comparison of the Sig with the Canon 10-18 on R7 is eye opening.) Both rely on R7 IBIS but so far so good. The 100-400 + R7 is magic so that leaves 50-100. So PP's 45-135mm 2.8 IS STM (70-200) suggestion would be perfect. Canon or Sigma please release this.

In the mean time I'll use the RF-S 18-150 as it covers most of the boxes quite well except perhaps for eyeball focus only portraits, but Sig's 50 f2.8 is pretty close. Then there is Sig's 56 f1.4 ... - liked it on the M.

Thankfully, since the M-system was such a popular seller there is a pretty large supply of used gear around.

Plus, B&H has 51 different, new EF-M lenses in stock. None of them are from Canon.

Canon is only going to release enough RF-S lenses to keep the casual buyer kit buyer satisfied.

I never really liked the M6II body despite some fun lenses. Mostly used it with adapted EF lenses so I'm very happy with the R7, not too heavy but handles lenses that were just too big for the M. The controls are a lot less fiddly and the AF - well!

So with Sigma's additions the RF-S lineup will be pretty good by the end of the year. The RF 24 and 35 f1.8 primes are about 9 oz, same range as the RF-S zooms and go 1:2. What is missing are the two EF-S f2.8 1:1 macros 35mm and 60mm. Don't expect much here. Agree that Canon so far has just dumbed down the poorer of the M lenses except the 18-150. But I really like its range and macro ability at 60 mm. So no real sour grapes for the RF APS-C lens coverage on my part.

I don’t (currently) own any RF-S lenses. I haven’t had any issues sharing RF and EF lenses between a full frame R6 and the APS-C R100.

In fact, that’s one of the reasons I sold off my M kit. I wanted to move up to FF ML without having three lens mounts.

Yes, the M50 was the number selling camera in Japan for several years. Every other Japanese tourist here in Honolulu worn a white M50 with a leather half case. I went through a couple of the M series and had a whole fleet of lenses. Only camera system I learned to truly dislike. Extremely awkward to hold and horrid tiny physical controls. The wee R7 is like a god in comparison.

28 & 50/1.8 are pretty tiny, I can't say I'm terribly interested in fast aps primes, I still have Rokinon 85/1.4 & 50/1.8 II, and they do pretty well on the occasions I use them (DSLR,) very light

On teles I think I'm pretty happy getting longer reach of ff and not super interested in aps only macro plus i prefer longer 180+ macro or so. On uwa just get a zoom, pretty much done. Really like 55-250's easy to adapt I suppose

Sorry, I wasn’t aware that canon had relaxed with the RF mount patents, knew they were considering it, but nothing more.

Well the18-35/1.8 Art & 50-100/1.8 Art were/are much revered. Let’s all hope they increase the latter to 135 (50-135 Art) that really would be a killer combination on the likes of R7, R10/50.

Tbf, I’d happily trade the fast 1.8 for 2.8 if it meant smaller as it’s almost as big as the canon 70-200!! also add vibration control, ditto same for the 18-35… hope they re formulate and create the aforementioned 16-50/2.8.

…..and then….and then re-release the 1.4 triplets 16,30 & 56mm in RF-s.

Could they follow Tamron and make all this weather sealed too?

I would drop the cash and lighten my existing kit for sure.

Fingers crossed 🤞

(Has to be said tho’ why can’t canon do it??)

Case in point…
Right now it’s drizzling and very damp here in the UK, perfect weather to take stunning shots. But I don’t want to haul heavy FF kit nor do I want to take my unprotected M system out either. The air is so damp outside.

This is where my Pentax kit comes into its own. Autumn/winter looks to have begun here.
I think for sure I’ll be adding the Pentax K3 possibly the K3iii sooner than canon can offer a like for like alternative. Currently using the old K5iis (before you mock I suggest you read the specs <wink wink> ) but the K3 viewfinder is supposedly huge?

The sadness for me is knowing the mythical canon alternative version would be superior. They have the immense resources not to mention experience to hand. Tragic

A missed opportunity to sell to so many of us non “Photographers”

Like previous poster said, what I’m seeking is basically what Fuji offers, The similarities between the old M system and Fuji didn’t pass me by, hence why I dived in and filled my boots .

Actually Sigma has announced exactly the lenses you spoke of - 16, 30, 56mm f/1.4, and their (latecomer) 23mm f/1.4 as well.
Though why Canon is actually sitting on two very good APS-C lens designs without releasing them for RF mount is beyond me. I'm speaking of the 22/2 and the 32/1.4 of course. Maybe they want to avoid having anyone actually sticking with APSC instead of eventually migrating to FF (wherein lies the big dollar for the company...) Allowing some Tamron and Sigma lenses was probably seen as an "in-between" solution.

Do you have a link for the 16,30 & 56 please?
Just googled and all I’m seeing is the older ef-m. Seen the RF 18-50/2.8, will go back and read up, but nothing on the other 3 primes.

Look up prices of
- a used RP
- a used R6mkI
- a grey market R8

Think three years ahead.... >> we don't need aps-c for price, and the size of the R8 works fine as well.

For Sony you can slap a 70-350mm on the A7CR and have more than 24Mp. The price of that body will come down as well.

If I was budget limited needing a crop camera system immediately, I would definitely buy used M stuff. The full frame RF primes are too expensive for their equivalent apertures, and the crop primes will have to be replaced anyway when migrating to full frame.
The RF 24mm stm for instance is 720 euro in my market, while it does f/2.8 equivalent only.
The RF 28mm is a bit more affordable, but f/4.5 equivalent in a prime?

A used RP is 550 euro, and a 50mm Stm (new) is 220 euro. The R8 will cost next to nothing within 3 or 4 years. The RF 24-105mm stm is affordable as well, while it outperforms all the crop zooms.

I don't see the appeal of the R10.
