The recent ‘oldie’ thread has had me reminiscing past bodies and sensor sizes.

Still have my 1Div, still works flawlessly. Just charged both batteries up 😂

Curious to those that owned the 1.3 bodies what your favourite lenses were back in the day.

Anyone care to chime in??

Tempted to slap the old 24-85usm on..
Or go modern and attach the 35mm f2 is… equiv to 45/2 with IS !! Nice..

16-35mm f/4L IS;
Indeed, the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 too;

Actually both are doing double duty on FF now in my case. I'm using the 1D Mark IV rarely now, but it's far from obsolete.

Then again , the 70-200 and 100-400 teles are good on any format, as are the bright primes. I just wasn't a man to agonise over numbers and equivalence. My go-to combo was the 16-35 + either 70-200/2.8, Tamron 70-300 or Canon 100-400. The lenses are still the same, actually.

Great choices 👍🏻
I just went to grab mine and got sidetracked by my 6d/40 😂
Just been outside and admit I had forgotten just how great that combo is, even wide open at 2.8 it’s sharp, but switch to live view and it gets even sharper!! Admittedly the AF is sluggish 😂.

I’m off out tomorrow, taking the 6D/40…that’s all.

I’ve gotten so hung up on GAS recently (it’s all this forum talks about these days - pretty certain it’s canon bots fuelling gear envy) I had forgotten that these old cameras (and lenses) still deliver, albeit a little slower.

Pretty much any lens one would use on FF would be acceptable.
In addition, some of the lenses with poor corners like the 16-35/2.8 (1st version), 17-40/4, and 24-70/2.8 come to mind. I have not used any of my 1D series bodies in so long, they probably don't even work with the old batteries.

You are right, that crop factor made many lenses with iffy corner performance look decent. Many people I knew used the Sigma 12-24mm (the first iteration) with 1D bodies, but few kept it for FF use, probably because they also found that 12mm on FF is way out there, and a 16-35mm is a better choice.

I also enjoyed my 1D Mark IVs when I had them.

As a photojournalist and event photographer, the 16-35mm f/2.8L and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS were my go-to lenses on APS-H (I used the Mark II versions of each). The 1.3x crop gave focal length ranges of 21-45mm and 91-260mm, nearly perfect for all types of people photography. With two bodies and these lenses I almost never had to make a lens change (unless switching to a fast prime for some specialty use).

For outdoor events and daylight sports, I also enjoyed using the EF 70-300L. It gave a range similar to the 100-400 on full frame, but in a smaller lighter package.

While these older cameras do have limitations compared to contemporary models, I actually miss the APS-H format.

I really liked my 17-40L on my last 1.3x crop body. Really allowed the lens to shine while cutting out the weak points of the lens. It just made the lens look like a super star. Come to think of it, it made the 24-105L look great too. Really miss that lens.

Well, any lens is bound to look better on 1.3x crop, the only real question is whether 1.3x crop is (was?) enough to rein in all the issues. I know that the corners on, say, my old Sigma 14mm f/2.8 still looked iffy on the 1D, and of course they're downright atrocious on FF. In fact I'm not really using that lens very often since I went to FF, because the 16mm setting of my 16-35/4 is wider on FF than the 14mm on 1.3x crop, and the 16-35 is much better behaved for sharpness.

My favorite lens on my 1DIV is the 300 2.8L. If you add the 1.4X it gets you out into short birding range. Also for event shooting gets you out to effective 420mm on a pro body. I used this combination extensively for bike racing, marathons etc. My 1DIV quit working several years ago and would only work in silent shutter mode. I sent it all over the US trying to get it fixed and nobody could do it. A few weeks ago I was playing with it and completely by accident discovered that one of the contacts in the camera had something on it. Qtip and some cleaner and it works again like new. Lesson learned.
