M43 or FF in Costa Rica?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · M43 or FF in Costa Rica?

I'm curious what gear I should take to CR. I shoot both FF and M43. In FF, I have the Canon R5 with Sigma 150-600 (C). In M43, I have the OM1 with Leica 100-400. Wondering if I should take the FF gear or the M43 gear. I'd be traveling with my wife and two young kids so I'm leaning towards M43 to keep the weight down. But if I take M43, I'm wondering if I should consider the Oly 300 or the Oly 100-400 instead of the Leica 100-400. Thoughts?

I'd recommend M43 based on weight, as you said, as well as portability, given that you will be with family.

That is an easy one if you ask me. The OM-1/100-400 is smaller and lighter while being faster on the wide end. The only reason to consider the Olympus 100-400 is if you wanted to use a teleconverter. The Panasonic Leica is a very nice zoom. I like a zoom over a fixed focal length.

I'd probably take the 40-150 + x1.4 TC and the 300/4. Light in the rainforest is always a challenge. Especially at dawn and dusk. Far better IQ than the 100-400s.

Since you are with the family those two plus a 12-40/2.8 and a couple of small fast primes for family portraits.

Good advice here. I concur.

Yes, in Costa Rica from what I’ve read, you need all the light you can get.

He only owns the 100-400 (?), and you want him to buy or rent 5 or 6 lens to take with his family

He didn't say that was the only lens he owns and he even mentioned the 300/4 himself! I'd rent if I didn't own them. Worth it for a trip you've already spent a lot of money on.

He's got at least 2 x M43 cameras - it'd be rather curious if he only owned one lens 😜

Right, neither of us knows how many lenses he owns. As to whether renting X-number of lenses is worth it for the OP is up to him and his family, not us.

Did you see where I said " I'd probably..."? It was a suggestion, what he does with it is his business but it is at least a consideration.
Not offering potential options but just keeping quiet isn't helpful in the slightest! Clearly he hasn't shot in rain forests before (I have x6 times).
He can ignore the information or give it some thought. It's irrelevant to me personally but may also be a potential solution.

I have the Lumix 35-100. Didn't consider the low light for CR so thanks for the tip. Now I'm wondering if i should take my Canon R5 with 70-200 and Sigma 150-600? R5 Would be better in lower light than the OM1.

Then that is what I'd take (if you don't want to rent). The 70-200 would be great for hummingbirds too. I'm sure you'll see plenty as I believe most hotels put out feeders for them.

Shooting on the edge of rainforests is often excellent birding and you don't need the fastest lenses, but once under that canopy, especially at dawn and dusk, the ISO can rocket.

As much as I love my m43 gear, if I were only bringing one camera I'd take the full frame.

If it were me (with my lens line up) I'd take my gh7 with something wide-ish for general purposes (family pics) and my a7r5 for landscapes/low light needs.

And then I'd complain the whole time that my back hurts and I should have brought less gear lol... but that's me and I don't fight it anymore

I think you have ‘it covered’ either way.
I had heard the AF performance of the Leica 100-400 received a nice bump when in use with the OM-1. I suppose I might try to verify if that’s true which may then rule out concern for an Oly 100-400 substitution. The 4/300 simply is a spectacular lens.
As previously mentioned, shooting under a jungle canopy will result in high ISOs. I will not argue that FF high ISO results may offer improved image quality over the same high ISOs from m4/3. I will argue that using the very high ISOs you will surely encounter will mean either format’s images will require a good denoise app and a good denoise app may close the gap well enough as far as final image quality results are concerned.
Managing expectations might be a suggestion.

Low light is an issue. I would take the R5 for better low light performance although I might regret mot having ProCap. I think, given the cost of a CR trip I would invest in the new 200-800 zoom.

The 200-800 f/stop range definitely would not enhance ISO performance.

Cheers,

I have the R5 and the OM1 V2. The OM is much more high ISO tolerant than the R5.

I'm at the same dilemma. African Safari in Feb.

Last trip I took the OM-1 with the 150-400 f/4.5 and my Canon R5 with the RF70-200 f/2.8 plus a few TCs a RF16mm f/2.8 in a small Thinktank Roller. Worked out well.

Now I have the new Canon R5 Mk II and my original R5 with the RF 100-500, 70-200 f/2.8 and the new RF 24-105 f/2.8. I also have (Yeah I have GAS) 2 OM-1 Mk IIs along with the 150-400 and the 40-150 f/2.8 Pro and 12-40 f/2.8 Pro II.

For weight alone it's the M43kit, but the new R5 MkII is a beast.
So, all Canon, all OMS, or a combo again.

I did figure out how to get the OM-1 Mk II and the 150-400 in a larger Thinktank roller with the R5, the RF 100-500, and the RF 70-200 and the 24-105 f/2.8... but the weight. I may have to pay for a "freight seat" on the smaller planes.
This will be my fourth Safari and primarily in Kenya at the Mara, Samburu and Amboseli.

Keeps me awake at night... I don't think I can leave Gandalf the Great White Wizard at home in any event.

I can see why. There are times when the gear seems to control your life.
