Great shots! And you had good overcast which to me gives you more ability to add punch to the shots like Guy was mentioning above. My daughter does club & school lacrosse, so can appreciate the effort for sure. My setup is an A1 & 70-200 2.8II, which unfortunately often requires a 1.4 or 2xTC depending on where I'm at around the field.
Not sure I could justify a 400 2.8, but possibly the 300GM. Your shots have me in the mood to go shopping.
Ha-ha thanks! I didn't know people like this "punch" a lot When I started photography I also liked to push contrast to the limit, but my wife knocked that contrasty/punchy look out of me quickly. She explained that males and females have slightly different color perception (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21675035/), which partially involves contrast because it's compressing the available color range. That particular sample may benefit from a careful push, like +20 White, but then the t-shirt "4" and the goal keeper's helmet should be muted down. On the "punchy" photo the #4 is not the subject, but she became ultra bright, and she's attracting much more attention than the in-focus subjects. You can see it by defocusing your vision and looking at the picture again. Your eyes stop on the super white t-shirt first, and only then you start noticing the other people in the frame.
I used to shoot the A1, but it was a little frustrating with lacrosse. Probably due to goggles or maybe just overall human body recognition. I shot the A1 and A9III side by side in March, and after that I pretty much stopped using the A1, and sold it in a month. Give the A9III a try and you'll be surprised how good its AF is.
