I could have sworn that there was a f2.8L version of the EF 17-40mm, but I cannot find reference to it anywhere. Am I mistaken on this?

Yep 17-35 2.8L
I bought a new one back in 1997 along with the canon eos1n. The lens cost me….£1575.00!! It wasn’t very good, also bought the 35-350L too. I was doing a stint as a press photographer 😂
The 35-350 with the 540ez gun mounted on the eos1n was my mainstay daily kit. It covered everything…‘twas a brilliant combination back then👍🏻

Still have a 35-350…used it last winter with my RP…nice!

The EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM was the replacement for the original EF 20-35mm f/2.8L. It was in turn replaced by the 16-35 f/2.8L USM when Canon widened all its "holy Trinity" zooms following the introduction of the APS-H-format EOS-1D (28-70 -> 24-70, 80-200 -> 70-200, etc.).

You may be thinking of the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. It was often compared to the 17-40 f/4 for crop body users and many believe it is L quality.

I had the 17-35L for a couple of years (2008-2010). It was fine on APS-C and APS-H but I guess it did fall off the cliff on FF. Longish MFD (42cm) set it apart from the more modern UWA zooms which all had the MFD of 28cm. It went with me to a couple of very memorable places including Hong Kong where I wished for something (a lot) wider, of course... hence the addition of the Sigma 14mm that I still have to this day, even though the 17-35 is long gone and replaced not once but twice (first by the 16-35/2.8 II, then by the 16-35/4 IS).
