Like 15 years ago... not that long.

I am stepping back into the photography world. I've spent the last 20 years chasing money with my career and have decided to step back to a modest career that is more personally fulfilling. With that said, I'm going to try and supplement a little with photography and getting some good memories with my kids.

I just acquired a Nikon D850, I'm a Nikon fan boy don't fault me. I will pick up the trinity, however I do have so.e questions.

I use to shoot with a Nikon D300s and D700. I am wanting to regear for sports. Soccer, football, track etc.

Will the improved IQ and advanced ISO capabilities accommodate the F4 line for fast action quality shots in lower lights?

Thanks fam!

Welcome back. You should post this on the Nikon forum, for sure.

Okay, since I’m Dutch and we’re known to be direct, I’ll open the discussion with what others will be reluctant to mention: why did you buy a D850?

I mean, it’s a great DSLR, probably the best ever, but it has been overtaken by mirrorless. For the use cases you mention, you’re better off buying a Z6III and good lenses than putting money into what is now old tech.

The D850 was probably not too expensive, but your trinity will be real money that’s going to lose value over time.

So, welcome back. But please make sure you know what you’re doing before buying into what is already destined for history.

Agree. Spending on a D850 and the F mount trinity is not wise, at least not if buying new. Yes the Z6iii is sufficient for the current use described by the OP. But the prices on a used Z8 are now below $3k on the B&S forum so that is a direct replacement for the D850, if the OP does not care about size and weight - which they don't see to if they are talking about a D850 and the trinity. It also sounds like the OP is not cash constrained so...

I totally get this, but right now it is the cost of entry. I committed to my wife to keep this out of our family budget. So I'm selling other toys to fund this until I can make $. I can easily work for the next 5 to 7 years with this route.

I will also be honest the deal I got was too good. Less than 2k actuation and I got it for basically a few hundred.

I will regear if this takes off like it did 15 years ago and drop serious money when I'm back shooting collegiate sports.

If that works for you, fine. Just know that over time you’re probably lose more money on it. If cost is an issue and you’re looking at shooting sports, why do you even need the trinity. I never was a sports shooter, but I imagine you don’t need a wide angle for it.

Won't be exclusively sports. Remember I'll be shooting family and kids in general. Studio will happen again eventually.

D850 one of the noisiest cameras out there. All the mirrorless owners shooting in silent shutter cursed the D850 guy for scaring off the owl.

If you look Nikon I would just jump to the D8 and start building out your quit. Nikon Z8 AF will be lightyears behind your D700/D3 days (and I loved the D3/D4/D810 cameras). But the AF is so much more advanced now.

I would not think of making money with it and keeping it a hobby. Photography is most places seem be very saturated unless you have a strong niche that the market is weak in. A lot of areas I see its a race to the bottom with pricing.

I wish you look on this fun journey!! Always fun to get back into a hobby, I think most of have been here.
