I'm looking for a support harness to use with my Gitzo monopod, Wimberley WH-100 gimbal and 800/600mm lenses.

If you have used a monopod support harness, please share ....

1. What harness you use

2. What uses it is good for or not-so-good for

3. Whether you are able to track birds in flight effectively.

This is how I tether a 500/4L IS + 1D-series body, on my Manfrotto Neo-Tec monopod. I have a loop of climbing sling, slung diagonally across my torso (i.e. from one shoulder to the other waist level). My 500/4L IS has a short loop of (blue) cord sticking up from its middle (see photos), which is secured to the big lens by the Manfrotto strap you see in the photos. I keep a carabiner on the sling across my chest, and simply clip in to the cord loop on top of the lens. Usually, I drop the monopod by about a foot, and then it hangs nicely on the chest sling, leaving two hands free for another camera. You can even walk about, dragging the end of the monopod, as long as it doesn't get between your legs. Alternatively, I can shorten the chest sling, and hold the lens/monopod at full height.

That's a clever setup. I was wondering if the harnesses flag bearers wear in the parade might work.

I've thought about that. I figure the foot-holder cup is up above knee level, and so to have the rig held by its top (for stability), the monopod would have to be pretty short. You could rig up something for the monopod so you always shoot from the flag bearer harness, but the ground is steadier.

I haven't tried, it, but it looks interesting. Ron has several other videos about his harness system at https://www.youtube.com/@whistlingwingsphotography/videos. He sells the kit, but you could put one together yourself if you wanted to

This another good walkthrough of the pros and cons of tripod, monopod and harness:

Has anyone used this SpeedShooter system?

I have been using a rig like this for quite a while.
Gitzo/Wimberly Monopod combo.
For the harness I have the upper body portion of a rock climbing harness, (do a search for variations).
I have a stainless hook, (carabiner would work), lashed in the center of the harness mid chest.
To cup the bottom of the Monopod I have a PVC pipe end cap on a dacron cord loop that allows me to alter the height simply by tying a loop in at the distance I want.

If I don't want to use the Monopod I still use the harness to have the camera on my chest a bit like the Cotton Carrier position, (or a Mom carrying a small baby on a chest carrier !!!.)
Works like a charm.

Not as steady as the ground, but steadier than handholding. Maybe more convenient for some than a monopod.
