Maybe I’m late to the party, but it’s occurred to me that all my beautiful gear is extremely vulnerable. If the quote I keep hearing “ it’s not if but when” an EMP or solar flare will put us back to the Stone Age. I’ve had these ugly visions of using my Z8 with a long lens as a hammer.

Is anybody offering any ideas of how vulnerable we are with our gear? Does anyone offer any protection for our gear from such events? I’ve recently purchased a Mission, Darkness bag, the small one that could be used as a camera bag to generally store some gear in, when not use. Maybe I have bigger issues to worry about than my camera gear if we have an EMP…. right??

I thought about all of our digital images being lost… the memories all gone just like a house fire often takes them. So I’ve been backing up a lot of them on small Sandisk SSD’s and those are going in the EMP bag. Maybe sounds a bit crazy. I don’t know. And I don’t know if these bags really worked like they are supposed to. But I figured it’s worth a shot.

Maybe, maybe I might just wanna digitally capture the chaos and confusion that will ensue and post to this board. Not funny!

Seriously, does anybody have any ideas or are you doing anything about this potential?

I think if there is an EMP event that ruins everyone's electronics and sends us back to the stone age, whether or not your Z8 works is going to be the absolute least of your worries

If you do genuinely want to protect your electronics from an EMP, a Faraday cage will do it and you can buy proper Faraday cases that look and function just like Pelican cases for various storage purposes.

Even tinfoil can protect from EMPs, and if you have some left over you can make a hat.

If a CME or EMP is that strong? As others have said. Loosing my gear would be the least of my worries as others have said.
When I lived in FL a neighbor came out with the look of death on his face asking if the sun had exploded. What he was seeing actually was a halo or sundog. I calmly told him that if the sun did indeed explode? We wouldn't know about it. Since the light we see is 8 mins old. And there was nothing we could do about it anyway.

I'd be more worried about the Yellowstone Super Volcano exploding before and CME or EMP! I keep reading from experts that Yellowstone is not overdue to explode. Yet they really don't know for sure. Nature will do what it wants when it wants.

Now you made me look up the Yellowstone Super Volcano. I’m not going to worry about that one, either. But it did strike me as quite silly that NASA suggested they could relieve the pressure by pumping water into the volcano. I’m no expert, but that sounds to me like relieving the pressure of a balloon by making a hole in it. So, I’ll just continue to worry about humans.

The risk of losing your data on a external SanDisk SSD is far higher than an EMP.

I'm not too worried about the Yellowstone Super Volcano either. I'm about 900 miles due south. If it does eventually blow? One there is not one thing I can do about it. Two. it's the people east that should be more worried. Trusting science is a good thing but one can't predict what nature will do. Just look at what happened in Yellowstone when that one caldera blew a month ago. If those people were a couple of hundred feet closer it would not have ended well. And that was just a hydrothermal explosion and not a volcanic one!

i worked. didn't shut everything down. got my shots wore my masks and kept moving forward until they offered a buy out.

This is a great conversation, folks…

SNEGRON7 made me laugh out loud… all the bugs are missing that they wanted us to eat and I just heard a plane doing some more aerial spraying so if there are any left at all, they’re finishing them off. Oh wait a minute Bill Gates has got 127,000 acres in the United States and 10,000 roughly in Ohio… Maybe it’s their bugs they want us to eat if we don’t have any of our old bugs, but thank God somebody will have some bugs. I read that they are saying that fly larva are incredibly rich in protein and they’re considering that for us to eat in our food. Oh wait a minute didn’t they used to call fly larva maggots

“Fly larva” that’s a much more palatable term, right?

That anyone would worry about such things makes me sad for the general level of common sense absent in this time when we clearly need it the most.

Not gonna make it long after the power goes out...

Good news though, my FM3A and basement full of developer will help me document OP as he's ripped in half by wolves! I'll make sure to mail you guys a copy.
