A friend of mine just got back from Canon dropping off his R5 for shutter replacement. The guy at Canon was shocked and said he’s never seen this before. His shutter count was 1.5 million 😁

Mechanical shutter? That is impressive. Electronic shutter? Doesn't mean much.

Wouldn't a "shutter replacement" indicate the mechanical shutter not the sensor itself which is what the ES is?

Yeah, but doesn't the R5 count the ES also in the total count? If it does then it could be a mix of MS/ES towards that 1.5M. Regardless, impressive.

I remember some Nikon D5 shooters that had their cameras close to 2M. Specifically there was a lady on DPReview forum that shot figure skating and had some seriously crazy MS counts.

My 1DX and 1DXII (right) in March 2023, about 4 months after I switched fully to mirrorless. The 1DX does not report higher than 1M actuations. I guess you needed to upgrade to the 1DXII for that feature.

I have no idea if they count ES as well. Seems strange that they would though.

My analysis is based on the (2) R5II's I've owned for several weeks now, while shooting along side my R5's. Based on your response maybe you think I'm one who's never used one?

No need to be defensive. I disagree with your analysis, that's all. Whether you own or don't own one or have used one or not is kind of immaterial, but I can only go off what you wrote in your original comment to the other poster. I appreciate your expanding on your thoughts in your post to me, but still disagree with your original premise.

I think you need to go back and read the thread again and you'll see you were the one being defensive so much as to act like I called pre-capture a gimmick - "It's not a gimmick". I said nothing of the sort, not even close. My post was a very simple and straight forward one to a member who was concerned with the R5II's expensive price tag. I simply asked if he needed a few features the R5II gives you over the R5 and suggested if not then save your money and buy an R5. That's it.

Owning the R5II's is very relevant as I'm able to test them to determine what I'm getting over my R5's, Not much in the stills department other than what I mentioned. You can see another member mentioned the R5 is 90% of the R5II for half the price, and that was my point. The R5II is a great camera but so is the old R5, and it's very capable. If you are one who relies 100% on AI AF and want the camera to do everything for you then maybe that's why someone might think the R5 is much less capable than it is.

IMO, when considering budget and value, two cameras is better than one. So unless you are someone who shoots primarily the things the R5 can't do, then (2) R5's is better than one R5II. I would happily take (2) R5's to Africa instead of one of my R5II's as I can already tell you which would yield a better end result.

And at this point, for approx $700 more, you can own an R3/R5 combo for the price of an R5II. So there's options to look at when you are considering budget, versatility, and value, which was what my post to

My plan is two R5 IIs and one R5 for Africa.

Everyone has different priorities and needs. For me the variable framing rate in ES and the 14-bits for focus bracketing are most important, but I'm looking forward to better AF at least for some species. I've already confirmed that the AF for

Nice! Certainly if you can go big, then go big. Your Africa setup is ideal.

Well that 6 months flew by, I just went to B&H and it said they had the R5 II in stock and ready to ship (body only). Time passes so fast. Seems like just last week!

Yes, how time flies.

I have to assume that the previously mentioned marketing strategy of not selling anything did not work and Canon management decided that selling a product is a better and more profitable strategy!

I really learnt something today!

Wonder how B&H got them.
Still nowhere to be seen in my country, estimated delivery end of December 2024.

It seems “shortages” creat panic buying, even with expensive, non-essential cameras.

And they removed the "6 month" thing from the website. I still feel supply is very constrained outside of the US. Maybe parts rolled in. Maybe it was all BS. Who knows, but it is a good thing that more people can buy their cameras now.

US and Canada got a lot of cameras, Europe got very few and they are still listed as coming end of December 2024. It is not 6 month but a lot more than a week.

Stock from day one in other parts of Europe at all sellers. Not much demand, I guess.

End of December? In Norway we are used to "pay the most, get the least". This is a case of "pay the most, be the last". Perhaps Canon does not care about smaller markets.

I really don't think there is much of a shortage.

Back in stock at B&H as of now.
