Whilst I agree with you on the size, why did you buy these fast lenses?? Bragging rights??
The crazy high iso capabilities of modern cameras means you would have been well served with smaller slower lenses, but you chose to go BIG !! Be hopes your pictures justify that kind of outlay otherwise you will look like you’re just showing off…..

All the gear, no idea trope

Just sayin’

Hey, I get where you’re coming from, and I appreciate the honesty! But let’s be real—if I were in it just for the bragging rights, I’d probably be shouting from the rooftops about my gear. Instead, I’m here venting about how my back is already feeling the strain from lugging it all around!

You’re right that modern cameras have amazing high ISO capabilities, and I could have gone with smaller, slower lenses. But honestly, I went big because I’m chasing that extra bit of quality for the types of photos I love to shoot—whether it’s my kids, some birding, or capturing the perfect landscape while traveling.

So, no “all the gear, no idea” situation here—just someone who’s passionate about photography and trying to get the best possible results. And who knows, maybe I’ll surprise myself and justify the outlay with some killer shots!

Just sayin’ 😊

It’s the rites of passage I guess
I was the same back in the dslr days, buying better, faster etc etc.
I later realised the bulk of it made no real difference, except to my back, shoulders and nerves… constantly worrying if someone would steal it.

I’ve gone completely the other way now, don’t use canon much these days except for sports and macro, other than that I’ve found an alternative.
But as I say, it’s the rites of passage and it’s the same with every hobby, you buy the best thinking you will be the best. Then you get wiser and see through it and smile to yourself as others follow you down the same well trodden path

We’re all suckers 😎👍🏻

The pinnacle RF lenses are generally larger than their EF counterparts, as you've found. However, almost everything else got smaller, due to external zooming. The 14-35 is tiny for what it is, as is the 70-200/4 (pretty much the same size which is nuts). It sure would be nice to get more svelte fast primes, similar to the recent ones from Sony, but that's clearly not the direction Canon is going. It's a shame the 35/1.4 has the compromises it has, especially for its size. But the 1.2 primes and 28-70 are still so impressive that they earn their size. As does the 24-105/2.8 which is basically the same size as the large internal zoom 70-200/2.8s that veteran photogs have been using for decades, so they shouldn't have any reason to complain if they were fine with using those.

Personally I love small lenses as they are easier to carry on multi-mile hikes and are less conspicuous, but if you buy the big heavy fast primes, you should know what you're in for. Same goes for the 28-70/2 which is still unmatched by any manufacturer.

I like the R system because I can choose big, fast glass when I want it, but also have the option of smaller but still very good glass when I don't.

What smaller lenses stand out to you for quality? (genuine question, looking at switching)

From the reviews I've read, despite its excellent sharpness, it's got mediocre bokeh quality and mediocre chromatic aberration correction. People also like to complain about the distortion when uncorrected, but I know with my 14-35 that it doesn't matter in the end because the corrected result is still very sharp. Same with vignetting; I haven't noticed noisier corners. But still, with the size of the 35/1.4, I would've hoped it to have essentially no compromises. Such is optics/life though.

Chromatic aberration affects resolution, so you can't have both excellent sharpness and mediocre chromatic aberration correction.

I think the performance of this lens is about what you can expect for the size and weight. It could have been a bit better though if Canon had relaxed the requirements on "focus breathing". (I don't know who invented that stupid name.)

I own the RF 24-105 STM and RF 24-240 in addition to some EF 2.8 L zooms. The RF lenses are plenty sharp for my needs through most of the frame and give me the option of choosing a small/light lens when fast apertures are not required. Every lens is a trade-off and I'm happy to have more options in one system.

I think we have to accept bigger, heavier, more expensive, if we want to get sharper. Unless some revolutionary technology in lenses appears, of course.

Yeah 50/1.4 prime of yore was small, quite pocketable, but nowhere as sharp as latest big 50-55/1.4 Otus-like lenses which are bigger, heavier, more expensive, but sharper. Seems like this is the general trend.

I would not mind to get a RF 50/1.4 with the dimensions of EF-50/1.4 and sharpness of Otus 55 or 50Art, but I don't think I'm going to get it.

I like the 35 f1.8. I've taken some nice hand held night-scapes with very sharp stars and lights. It is also a great flower lens with its 1:2 close-up ability. Does focus stacks well. Relatively small and light weight.

I haven't used the 24 f1.8 much yet but I assume it will be just as good. Got it at a good discount to use as the 35's equivalent on the R7.

I also have the RF 16 f2.8 which is very small and light and nice IQ from what I've seen so far. With the R5's cropping ability it covers the 16-24 mm range to match up with my 24-105. I think it works for spur-of-the-moment night sky work though coma purists may disagree. I'll usually have it with me if I'm out there.

It is true that Canon still has weaknesses than Sony, in terms of compactness. No camera like A7c. R8 is a nice option but the sensor is not BSI. However, personally, I prefer Canon to Sony because I like Canon lenses' rendering more.

If you get the opportunity share some images in the Canon seasonal photo thread. Currently summer. Look forward to see some of your images in that thread.
