LP-E6P Battery Question

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · LP-E6P Battery Question

I know these batteries are not generally available yet but a question for those of you actively comparing your R5s to the MkIIs: The R5 cannot maintain 12 FPS mechanical shutter when the older LP-E6NH drops below 70-80% capacity. Have you found that the R5 can maintain 12 FPS deeper into the charge cycle with the E6P?

Thanks for your help with this.

They were available last week, but sold out once people figured out that the NH is practically useless in the 5D II.

I have not tested it, but the battery level where the NH drops speed has variability enough in the R5 that my test results might not correspond to your particular camera/battery. I know that sometimes an R5 lasted longer than 70-80%. On the battery analyzer I don't find much difference in the NH vs. P batteries other than the BMS for the NH cuts out at <4A compared to at least 8A for the P. There is slightly more voltage drop with the NH over 2.5A, but the newest one I have is a year older than the P. At this point you will find that a P battery should have good, fresh cells since they have only been out a few months.

I haven’t had a chance to try the E6P myself, but based on what I’ve seen, it looks like the R5 does a better job at maintaining 12 FPS with the E6P compared to the E6NH. I’ve noticed that the E6NH starts to struggle with burst rates when it’s below 70-80% battery, so if the E6P holds up longer, it could make a big difference. I’m definitely looking forward to trying it out when it becomes more available.

I suppose it depends on how the camera determines when the framing rate decreases. Is it based on the state of charge reported by the smart chip in the battery pack, the voltage under load, some combination, and/or other factors? I don't think the R5 knows what the P battery is yet unless there is some generic coding that Canon planned in advance. There is nothing in the FW 2.0.0 (May 2024) notes about batteries.

Thank you for the input! Guess I'll see if I can get one before my next trip to try out. The hope being that the P's higher voltage under load is detected by the R5 and lasts longer into the cycle.

Curious what people are shooting that they want MS AND 12FPS. I know there are still applications for MS as the read speeds aren't fast enough to eliminate all ES problems...but I can't imagine those applications also demand 12FPS??

I'm back from a birding trip in Costa Rica and found the ES and 20 FPS was all I could need for BIF and didn't use it often. I haven't seen any read distortion so far. I have ES and Tv assigned to C1. For less active subjects I usually use MS and H vs H+ if I want insurance shots. Often one shot is good enough since the shutter button is sensitive enough to give me multiple shots pretty quickly with little finger action where needed. I'm usually in Av with manual shutter.

I was asking about the battery because if I were to want 12 FPS the battery would almost certainly be drained enough not to support it. I carry spares, but ...

Also, should I use electronic first curtain with the R5? Some one on the trip said they used it on their R5 because there was less shutter shock. I'd never heard this was an issue with this body - it has one of the smoothest, quietest shutters of any body I've owned.

They should have left the MS out of the camera-

Maybe there is a sport or a shot that needs it but not in any of my use cases-

I often use the EFCS with some of the shakier lenses like the RF 70-200/4 IS. Compared to full MS it makes a notable difference at slow shutter speeds on a tripod. It won't matter at higher shutter speeds or with less shaky lenses. EFCS also allows 1/250th flash sync rather than 1/200th with the MS.

I'm not sure what you mean by Av with manual shutter. The definition of Canon Av is you set the aperture and it sets the shutter.

I believe the R5 only has 1 FPS and 20 FPS in electronic shutter and less dynamic range. Also, I like that the mechanical shutter closes when the camera is off reducing dust exposure when changing lenses.

I meant Av mode with mechanical shutter, sorry.
