I don't own the Canon remote shutter but I am interested in getting one especially for my birding photography and utilizing the pre-burst feature. Does anyone know if they work together?

That's a great question. Hopefully someone has the answer.

Can you half press on a remote shutter? If yes, then it should work.

EDIT: Found a user on B&H that posted this back in 2021.

"Although the website here cautions Only compatible in still mode. Will not trigger the camera in video mode this was not my experience when I tried it on my R5. On the R5 this wired remote switch worked exactly as you would expect as a substitute for pressing on the shutter button in video mode. PERFECT!"

Does anyone own the RS-80N3 wired remote and the R5 MII. (The R5 probably is the same)
I have video enabled to start stop with shutter button.
Could you check if this does start video?
B&H website says does not work on video. That may be only on the red movie button, but not sure.
And if you are testing, verify the pre-burst works with the half press of remote.
Thanks if possible to check.
Dave

I don’t have the Canon remote myself, but I’ve looked into it because I’m really into birding too. From what I’ve seen, it should work well with the pre-burst feature. I’ve heard it’s great for capturing those split-second shots. Just double-check that it’s compatible with your camera model before you buy.

I have the remote and it does work on the R5m2. Both in still and movie mode. In still the "pre-capture" icon is showing up in the viewfinder when you half press the remote. I use the 3 back buttons shooting mode (eye tracking, spot and eye control) so the remote is not of much help. However I suspect the remote could help if you use the shutter in the default "do it all" setting. Let us know how good it performs if you get the wired remote.

Thank You!
I ordered one yesterday after reading the review that it worked.
I used BBF for maybe 4+ years, until 9 months ago.
I still have 2 buttons configured for BBF for when my preferred focus method is not working.
If I hold it, it overrides the shutter button focus.
Been working great and never thought I'd give up BBF.
I am excited to use the pre-capture for eagle nest video, and 1/2 press for a long period waiting for action would move the camera a lot.
I will also use pre-capture for launching critters in images, but not as much.
I'll post back after trying.
Dave

I'm curious if the Camera Connect app allows, or will be updated to allow, half press when connected to bodies that have pre-capture?

I have used Camera Connect for 3 years or so. On R5 and R7. Does not have half press as far as I've seen. Have not checked to see if they updated it recently.
On my R5, if I used Camera Connect a lot, battery use was very high. But it worked well.

I mainly use it to transfer images to my phone but years ago I used it to take photos (tripod mounted) of some birds on a cold winter day. It was nice setting in the warm house but I almost spilled my coffee a few times. Tough wildlife shooting at it's best.

I know when connecting to my R5, it doesn't have a half press but I wasn't sure if it appeared when connected to a body that has pre-capture. So if it doesn't appear with the R7 then it doesn't seem to exist. It would be nice if they could add a second shutter button or just another button in the app just for pre-capture. Maybe someday down the road it might happen after more bodies come along that offer this feature.

I have verified that the remote control works for pre-capture, and it does NOT work for movie start/stop because to the best of my knowledge there's no way to set the shutter button to start/stop movies. At least under customize buttons, the shutter button can be configured only for stills but not video. In any case the way it comes out of the box the cable release doesn't work for movies.

Put the camera in movie mode and go back in the menu. There is a place to change it. I have on mine and used it several times already.

I am in movie mode and don't have the option.

Go to the Green tab at top of menu, then the second thing down allows you to set Shutter BTN function for movies. Funny spot for it, but it is there. There are settings for 1/2 press also, so hopefully 1 of those will work. I have a remote release ordered.

I just learned something today! Yes, now I can use the cable release to start/stop movie recording with full press on the remote.
