Caltech: Wine Study Shows Price Influences Perception

A rose by any other name might smell as sweet, but slap on a hefty price tag, and our opinion of it might go through the roof. At least that's the case with the taste of wine, say scientists from the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

Antonio Rangel, an associate professor of economics at Caltech, and his colleagues found that changes in the stated price of a sampled wine influenced not only how good volunteers thought it tasted, but the activity of a brain region that is involved in our experience of pleasure.

I have fancy cameras but I’m really enjoying using my Reto UltraWide & Slim right now. $17.

I think it works both ways. I know for me I find unique pleasure in using both very cheap and very expensive cameras, one for the pleasure of frugality and the other for the pleasure of luxury items.

With the Reto it is not about frugality, but because it creates a unique image. The surprise is from what happens to be a tiny, cheap package.

@snapsy w/re. to luxury items you bring up an interesting point. I have a few film Ms and even though essentially they are the same camera serving the same purpose, their price point which takes the expensive ones into what I consider the luxury items bracket are the ones used the least.

I sold what I consider the sweet spot M - the M4-2 - because I was picking up a new M6. But the M4-2 was glorious to use as it was used as a tool. It’s price point was expensive but reasonable - not too expensive that you’d worry - and it’s functionality was perfect. It wasn’t a garage queen, nor was it abused. It was just there to be used. @madNbad who is the current owner can attest to that.
The M that I currently have that is most similar to that is an M7. Another used but not abused camera that I bought from ebay Chile (!) a couple of years ago for $1500. I was sure it was going to be trashed because how could it be so cheap? (And it was a desirable high serial #). But I think it was so cheap because no-one wanted to buy a Leica from Chile!
I use that all the time the same way I used the M4-2 even though I have a perfect final serial # M7 sitting in a dry box. It’s because the Chile M7 had miles on it and the price point made it useable instead of me thinking I need to be careful.
Yeah, for sure the luxury ones are enjoyable to use, but are used in a very different way.

Absolutely with your budget.

My Leica M10 frustrates me (when shooting toddlers) and gives me satisfaction and joy no other camera has given me. It makes me want to go out and take photos.

My Sony A7 and iPhone take amazing photos but the further the level of automation for me the less I enjoy the photos.

Leica left me cold, but I love the GFX cameras and shoot with one (at one point, I had three of them!) even though I have zero practical reasons to do it.

It can work the opposite way too, though: my girlfriend is from France and knows her wine, and we get the most satisfaction from trying relatively affordable wines (sweet spot seems to be in the $15 to $25 range, in Canadian dollars) to find ones we love for a bargain price. I had a family reunion in Oregon some years back and we decided to splurge on a few expensive Oregon boutique wines and were disappointed in all of them -- they were good, to be sure, but we'd had wines we liked better at 1/4 the price.

Same with cameras: as Desmolicious points out above, it's very satisfying to find ultra-cheap cameras that deliver excellent images and are fun to use despite their price.

I find it hard to get rid of film cameras so have quite a collection...starting with two Canon FTb QLs from my student days. I also have about 4 Bronica bodies....and many lenses.

I did have some dilemmas regarding what to use. when shooting film regularly. I have a mint 1V HS (had maybe 30 rolls through it) and I was so concerned about 'un-minting' it I bought a mint Eos3 (not quite as mint as the 1V) and used that regularly, and didn't think it was the inferior camera to use. I find that I pretty much enjoy the cameras I get the most practise with...as and when I use them; although recently these have been Bronicas or 35mm range finders.

So far as I know, the only film camera that has failed has been a T90. Fortunately I have a spare!!

Same here! I just like cameras. It depends on what techniques or methods of photographing we’re talking about (horses for courses), but they all make me want to take photos.

Hi Desmolicious: Of the M cameras, did you whittle the choice down to one or two that you most prefer?

OP
It is not the price, but a camera that you feel at one with that makes me pick it up and enjoy the day.

I'm actually trying to figure out which camera I more enjoy using. Is my M11 too challenging (for me) or just right? Is the R5 too easy, or just right? Why did I enjoy the GFX 50R when I was in Holland a week ago, but now back in Vienna I don't care for it? How come the Ricoh GRIII cameras should be perfect for me when going out in the city, but I never, ever reach for them? Etc. Etc.

And then there's the Mamiya 6, which I re-bought after regrettably selling it years ago. I used it in Holland. Really liked the tactile feel of it, but almost immediately decided that shooting film with a camera like that isn't for me. The GFX is better, because I can move and shoot at will. With film, a slow camera is better for me, so I'm not inclined to spend a fortune on film.

My last major camera purchase was a few months ago. I bought a new Sony A7CII to replace the A7II that’s been on the copy stand since 2020. I’m sure it’s a fine camera to use for taking pictures but it was time for a more efficient scanning camera. With the A7II it was a multi step process to import a digital capture into Lightroom. Tethering was not an option and files needed to be moved through different folders to be available for conversion. Now it’s simply framing the negative in Live View and clicking the on screen shutter button.
In this particular case, spending more for a camera improves my workflow and makes using my film cameras even more enjoyable. So much that I’ve even started buying color film.

Tell me about it. I’m all over the place, but with whatever I’m using I’m not happy with my images.

Didn’t help I lost the screw-in diopter correction lens to my M11. How could that even happen, it coming unscrewed from my camera? $200 down the drain and a renewed reminder that I need accessories to make Leica work for me.

Make yourself comfortable on my couch.

Lets start with your telling me what is it that you don't like about your images?

After that we may want to visit about about your childhood and your relationship with your Mother...

Nikon F cameras - FE, FM, FM3A, F3 etc - are allergic to the screw in diopters/eye pieces. No matter how tightly I attach them, they go missing. It’s got to the point where I now check them every few minutes when I use those cameras.
Take a look at any of those cameras for sale - and about 90% of them are missing their eyepieces.

Nikon learned from this with the F6. You can only remove the eyepiece if you activate the viewfinder blind. Very clever of them.

We'll know soon!
I just traded in practically everything* for store credit, planning to get an S5 and 20-60 for it. I prefer touch-focus for video so it's fine for that over the 5ii, and it's an ergonomic extravaganza compared to the departing a7r2. I compared my upgrade to an α7iii plus 20-70, and on a tight budget the S5+20-60 wins out. I'll miss the 70-300 Tamron rxd, but like the 1:2 of the Lumix S variant.

Problem is I seldom wish to shoot past 200mm, and no system is into 50-200 for 36x24 format these days - it's 28-200, xx-300 or lump it. I'll punt on a tele selection for now; I ordered an L adapter for my Minolta 100-200, and my Pentax primes are good up to 135mm.

* I kept the gx7, such a good fit for me.

If a friend of mine said he wasn't happy with his images, I'd give him my Kodak Ektar H35 and say "just go shoot."

It can be a genuinely informative shooting experience when the only things you can control are the fact that an exposure was made, when that exposure was made, and how things are composed during that exposure.
