I know I saw this explained somewhere, but for the life of me I can't find it. In the display for the MII, after you focus the camera, a bar of dashes shows up on the right edge of the display. I assume it has to do with exposure, but I'd like to know more about it. Anyone know what it's real name is? I'd like to look it up and find out how it works. Thanks!

Page 335 of the pdf online manual shows info on exposure lock.

Look up exposure lock and you might find what you are wanting.

Maybe "Vertical Exposure Level Indicator" (https://cam.start.canon/en/C017/manual/html/UG-03_Shooting-1_0430.html)?

But what is it, and how is it different from the exposure meter and the bottom/center of the viewfinder?

When the Vertical Exposure Level Indicator is turned on it indicates the current exposure and I believe the horizontal meter at the bottom shows exposure compensation not the actual exposure. Turn off the Vertical indicator and the bottom horizontal meter indicates exposure.

I guess it is the Vertical Exposure Level Indicator, thanks for the tip! I couldn't find it anywhere. Info on exactly how it works is scant but I will play around with it and figure it out. Or just turn it of!

Thanks!

The horizontal bar shows you your dialed in exposure compensation.
The vertical one shows you the exposure difference of the current framing with respect to the locked exposure. As in, if you focus & recompose, the exposure will be locked when you half press the shutter, but the exposure "now" is different than it was "then" when it got locked.

This was introduced with the T90 and then fell by the wayside. I find it confusing and distracting so I turned it off.
