Is it possible to buy a travel camera that doesn't have million choices for things I NEVER use? I don't care about "scenes" or fish eye lens effects or toy effects or miniature effects, or taking "star" portraits. It goes on ad nauseam.....

How about one that lets me shoot in auto, aperture, shutter speed and manual modes.

Video capabilities would be nice but I have no intention of trying to re-shoot Gone with the Wind.

My G5x manual is 217 pages!!! For a camera I bring along to take photos of cathedrals; monuments; open air farmer's markets, interesting people and other such travel related things.

I am guessing the answer is no but just thought I would ask.

Oh, and "just don't use the other stuff" won't work for me. I just want a simple straightforward travel ready camera.

Thanks to anyone who chimes in.

The Leica Q3-

Best travel camera I have ever used- Simple layout, beautiful lens and sensor, simple design and menu system.

It goes with me almost every time I go on a business trip or holiday-

I generally have to go into a menu to change 1 setting, Face/Eye detect or Spot. I have a custom button for that.

Aperture, SS and ISO are all physical dials so you never have to go into a menu or change it electronically. A simple as it gets.

Not cheap though

I just rented an R3 and used it for an evening with the factory default settings quite successfully. So I'm not sure why 'don't use the other stuff' is not a feasible option for you. Just knowing its there gets under your skin?

You might be a candidate for the new Samsung phone. It supposedly has a nice camera and hides its digital processing well. There are very few settings on phone cameras.

The manual for even the R100 is pretty long. But the camera has few features compared to the rest of the line up.

Are you looking for an interchangeable-lens camera, or no? Budget?

I would prefer a non-interchangeable model but I am not totally opposed to an interchangeable lens model as long as it still falls into that travel camera range. Thanks Rusty but $6200 is a bit much. And yes Jedi...it gets under my skin

The Canon M series fit the bill perfectly but they have discontinued it. You could try to find a used one. I still us my M6II.

An R8 with a 28mm or 35mm lens? Pretty compact, great sensor and AF and currently going for $1000 at Canon refurbished. With a 28 or 35 lens cost is gonna be under $1500.

I second that. With the 28mm f2.8, the R8 is lighter than the Fuji X100VI, not much larger, and way more capable.

I will take a look at the R8 and I have heard a lot of good things on here about the Canon M cameras. A camera model can be "discontinued" but still "continue" to take great photos.

The 1967 Pontiac GTO is "discontinued" but what car aficionado wouldn't want one 389 or 400. Take your pick. 335 HP. yeah baby.......

Leica Q3 or any of the Fuji X series.

I'm partial to the Fuji since it's much more affordable.

I love my X100VI. If I could only keep one piece of photography gear, it'd be that camera.

Leica M. Even more stripped down than the Q3. But you won't like the cost of entry.

It costs a lot to protect your skin.

Nikon Df looks like a good match.
If you don't want to pay Leica prices, next option is camera that makes it easiest to ignore the other stuff.

Check the top of Df. Simple controls using dials.
Use it as it comes, factory settings.
Screw anything up, do factory reset and continue. Or, set time, then continue.

It is a small camera.

Canon made a apsc sensor - 24mpx built in lens camera - that is 24-70 equivalent. You can get it refurbished for about $1000 on amazon. It will fill the bill.

https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-powershot-g1-x-mark-iii-review

To summarise, not the best iq lens in the world but pretty good. I almost bought one and then bought the M5 which in turn meant I carried 3 other lens - for the interchangeable M5.

I bought the R8, and it is a very good camera ff, 24mpx. It is fantastic, but you will have to carry lens. The 24-50 is the closest to the one lens but 24-50 is more restrictive than 24-70. The 24-105 is a bit long and 390grams. You could get by with 24-50, 16 R8 for a very light kit. But it is not simple.

If you want small and simple the g1x III is the ticket. Pretty good sensor - apsc. Pretty good zoom 24-70. No other lens to haul around. Bad pictures are up to you.

The Sony RX100 V is another possibility but it has a smaller sensor. For me apsc is the bottom I will go to.

If you aren’t averse to discontinued cameras, then I can’t recommend the EOS M50 enough. Paired with any combination of these lenses: Canon 11-22, 22 f/2, 32 f/1.4; Sigma 56 f/1.4. I recommend these lenses for image quality and compactness. The Canon 32 is the best normal lens I’ve used on any camera mount.

The Sigma 16 f/1.4 is also pretty great, but is almost comically large compared with the others, especially as it’s one of the shorter focal lengths. If you’re prioritizing convenience over ultimate image quality, then the Canon 15-45 or 18-55 are good choices; I personally prefer the 18-55.

The problem you’ll run into with almost all of the cameras mentioned so far is that they have features you would likely deem superfluous. Even the Fuji X series, often recommended for travel, has a bunch of film simulation modes you would probably call ‘frills.’

I’m recommending the M50 because it’s a great travel camera and it minimizes the superfluous modes in the interface by bunching them under one icon on the mode dial, whereas P (‘auto’), Av, Tv, and M each get their own positions on the dial. It’s not the stripped-down model you wish existed at a reasonable price point, but it excels as a high quality travel camera with a reasonably sensible interface.

No frills and low budget? Grab a Canon EOS R100 and pair it with any of the small and inexpensive RF lenses available, or even the kit lens. I’m shocked nobody has mentioned it yet.

second this - had a Q then a Q2 and that is all I travel with. Have bought and sold a couple M bodies but just cant get into the rangefinder focusing. Debating picking up an SL2 to use as an M with a built in EVF essentially at the moment. I really enjoy shooting with the Qs though. They bring you back to the basics of having to use your feet to frame, the lens/camera combo is filled with character and renders beautifully. It would probably be the last piece of photo gear that I sell if I had to liquidate my collection. Sure my R5 and all of my camera stuff is more flexible but honestly, I dont need any of it. Just give me a Q and I'll be happy.

Edit - if you dont have the budget for a Q maybe try out a fuji X100 of whatever variety you can afford? I hear those are budget friendly Qs.

How about a Canon SL series? They are small, with the SL1 being the smallest DSLR ever. It's a Canon EOS body so you already know how to use it. It uses all you existing lenses so you can pick and choose out of your EF equipment. It's not mirrorless so you can shoot all day without recharging or carrying extra batteries. They're cheap, so no worrying about being mugged or choosing between loved ones vs expensive equipment. Leaving it hanging on your sling strap, keep a longer prime in a small case and no camera bag is needed.

There's only one downside and that's the focus system is brutally archaic on all the SLs. But as long as your vacation isn't on an F1 race track or in a dark cave...

I used to be the guy with two full frame bodies and the whole 24-70/70-200 f2.8 set up while travelling but the past few years I've been content with an SL1 and a few cheap primes. If I had to go mirrorless the R50 sounds like the direct replacement.

The R50 is very close to a replacement for the SL line. If the OP desires slightly more features such as an articulating touchscreen, the R50 is a great choice as well over the R100.

How about a Fujifilm X-S20 with the 18-55mm. I like this little kit that is offering a lot.

I’ll echo the previous member for recommending the M series.
I own the entire line up plus also still have both SL1 & SL2
I figure you’d be best served with either M10, M100 or M200

There are hardly any buttons at all. You could attach whichever lens from the line up you fancy, guessing you’d probably pick the 22/2?

My personal favourite is the M50 (either version) with the 22/2. I don’t like using cameras at arms length, yet get on fine with my iPhone…odd!
