Took the Canon R5_2 and 70-200 RF/2.8 out for an afternoon at a skate event in Portland-

Still own a Z8 and haven't shot a Canon since the 5DMarkII- The last time I shot a wedding for money-

So I would say I am a relative beginner when it comes to Canon AF-

This camera didn't miss. Very Very impressive for a first real outing- Basically just get my target in the box and it never leaves it-

Nothing amazing here just a fun day shooting-

Current Olympic champs in the series-

Edit: All Electronic shutter used-

Good stuff!

I also find the modern canon cameras can be just “pick up and play” type experiences.

Strongly considering a switch.

Photo #4: very curious to see what the guy with the fisheye got from that angle, based on the scene that was on the video display behind him.

And regarding that video board, very nice to see absolutely no LED weirdness (scrambled image) with e-shutter!

Its a fun camera for sure-

Biggest problem I have so far is getting used to the wheel vs d-pad-

Take a look at these photos, which feature some wide angle/fisheye action: https://theplatfrm.com/blogs/headlines/yuro-nagahara-wins-men-s-park-final-photos-highlights-rseo-2024

I don't think any of these are from the same angle though.

Fisheye Shooter was all video- They had separate photographers. The video on the livestream would cut to him. Thats why he has that big pack on his back for Wireless transmission of the video.

No, not that one, the one shown in "Winner in Portland for Park."

Thanks for tracking that down. I think that's the correct general location as the photographer in photo #4, whether or not it's him. There is variation in how the photos have been processed, so it could be a couple different photographers. Interesting to see that the fisheye look is still going strong in skateboarding after who knows how long (it's got to be decades).

Looking closer at photo #4, I now see that the video camera/TV angle was from the camera just visible at the very right edge of the frame. I like that angle (on the video board), with the city/buildings in the background better than the stills photos in the link. But I guess if you're going to commit to shooting a lot of fisheye, you need to be able to get really close to the action.

You're absolutely correction, there probably were multiple photographers there with fisheyes or WA lenses. Before there were articulated screens you almost certainly needed a fisheye as lots of action was either filmed or photographed from a trailing skateboard or up close and personal and you needed as much field of view as you could get. Plus, you can't pull focus so having a huge depth of field is very beneficial.

A fisheye also helps tell the story of the image. Traditionally, the best skateboarding images (and this probably true with other similar sports such as inline skating and BMX) show enough to allow the viewer to make an informed assumption as to where the skater started and will end.

For example, this Transworld Skateboarding photo gallery shows quite a few images where you can make an informed idea of where the skater is coming from and going to.

In another gallery, I found a great example of this using a longer lens:

Part of why I find your fourth photo so compelling from a traditional skateboarding photo perspective is because you can tell a lot of the story of the trick from this image. The second and especially the third photos do that too; I can see the story pretty well. That said, all of these photos are technically awesome. Nothing I've said is meant to denigrate your images.

Doing some internet sleuthing on this event, I found some images posted by Eakin Howard for Getty Images. Looks like he's a Nikon shooter, so probably not the photographer shown in # 4. I reviewed his posts to Instagram and the photos he chose to highlight are very similar to yours in terms of traditional sports composition techniques.

EDIT: I just realized rscheffler isn't the photographer.
