R5 II video DR is real

The one thing I was really hoping for with the R5 II is better video DR and a better LOG setting. I had tried CLOG 3 on the R5 and could not get along with it. CLOG 2 is a different story - it's great! Better colors, way better DR, super soft highlight roll offs...

The above video reflects my own experience with the camera in the past couple days. I had been keeping my Sony A1 around just for the video DR advantage. No need any more.

Some other notes:

Viewfinder is a lot brighter and thus easier to work with in bright sunlight. Just about as bright as the A1 viewfinder now - and that thing is very bright.

Annoyingly, you still cannot go from watching at a movie on the back screen and put the camera up to your eye and have it automatically switch to the viewfinder… The movie just keeps playing on the LCD.

Also annoyingly it is still not possible to mount the camera/memory card by plugging the camera into the computer. I like this feature on the Sonys - it enables you to just keep the card in the camera at all time, and thus don't necessarity need a card reader.

The view assist feature (for use when shooting LOG) seems to be miscallibrated - either looking too bright or too dark.

The new waveform (which does not disappear when you start rolling!!) is a great help. Cheers for that - and way better than a simple histogram.

Also, the buttons on the back of the camera are rounded a bit - much nicer than groping around to find buttons which are flush with the rear surface of the original R5 camera.

Thanks for mentioning this. I thought I'd read it somewhere earlier but it doesn't seem to have been mentioned by many. In any case, it's a seemingly small design detail that improves what has really annoyed me with the previous R5/6/6II body design.

There was a setting for this on the R5, and page 1008 on the online manual for R5 II shows how to set it up.

Dave - are you are talking about auto-switching during shooting? I am talking about while watching video playback, NOT while shooting...

Also, link to the manual you are referring to?

This is the manual I have - can't see page numbers, but here is the movie playback section:
https://cam.start.canon/en/C017/manual/html/UG-05_Playback_0070.html

Thx.

A couple more notes:
Video files look way better all around - not just when shooting LOG.
Colors, smoothness, it is more more "filmic" and less digital looking. (may be largely due to the increased video DR...)

IBIS is much more effective - I can now get stable footage with a 50 mm lens that does not have IS. This is without using the Digital IS - just using the IBIS.

The shutter is louder than the R5. Not loud, but louder for sure.

Meanwhile, some more raves about video DR with the R5II:

Link to manual, click on the PDF version and go to page 1008.

https://cam.start.canon/en/C017/

If that does not work, go to this page and go to manual

https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/eos-r5-mark-ii

This should tell you how to make it switch to EVF from screen,

I just tried and if you 1/2 pres shutter it returns to shooting mode.

Thanks Dave - I am familiar with that - but again I am referring to auto switching DURING VIDEO PLAYBACK, not while shooting.

My Sony A1, while watching video, auto switches between the screens if you put your eye to the VF.

Cheers.

And thanks for the links!

Now I understand what you are trying to do. I have usually only used the EVF for reviewing video, and mostly only use the screen for menu setting, so I never noticed it did not auto-switch. I leave my screen closed 97% of the time.

I'm interested in hearing more on this from the video editing experts here. Is Clog2 in the R5II really that much better than the old Clog3 in the R5? My video editing and color grading skills are not up to speed yet, so looking forward for more feedback on this topic.

I'm also interested in hearing from the video shooters how they feel about CLOG2 and Clog 3. I only have shot in the non-log settings on my R5 and now on my R5 MKII. I consider myself a beginner, and would like to learn from others.

I am not an expert, but it’s not just the cLOG - it’s also the newer sensor that is contributing to this.

I am able to connect the camera to my PC via USB C and copy files. FYI this is slower than using a card reader, but I had to do this initially because I had trouble with my card reader that were later solved by doing a low level formatting of the card in camera.

Thanks Howie. Is this using Windows?

What I am wondering about is *mounting* the card on a Mac, not going through the Apple Photos app or some weird import in DPP.
If anyone knows how to do this, I am all ears ;-)

Yes, I did it on a Windows computer.

On the R5, connecting it via USB-C cable to a Windows machine makes the R5 appear as another device in the left File Explorer pane under "This PC." Normally, I use Lr to import directly from the R5 over USB-C, and never remove the cards from the camera. In fact, I can't actually remember the last time I removed them. I would certainly assume that the Mk II acts the same way.
I have no relevant experience with such a connection on a Mac. Traditionally, Macs have been better at mounting PC-formatted drives than PCs have been mounting APFS-formatted drives, but that's no guarantee.

It’s both the sensor and the new log curve. Clog and Clog 3 were based on around 12-13 stops, whereas clog2 is the curve used for the most dynamic range. When looking at log footage you’ll notice that clog2 is had way less contrast, allowing more flexibility in the file.

Canon did an interview about why there was no clog2 in the R5c, their only cinema body to not have it. They mentioned it was the lack of DR in that sensor and it would just lead to noise. This sensor was rated about 16 stops of DR, which puts it up there with their normal cinema cameras, c70 being one of the best to take advantage of clog2.

I’ve taken some footage in the last few days with the r5ii and the latitude is amazing and I get great color and contrast even with very light grading.. essentially throwing a lut on it. There are tons of great clog2 luts on the net, so you’ll be find getting great looking video is easy.

You need to disable the auto import feature in Photos, Lightroom, DPP4 and whatever other image program you have on your Mac. Once disabled, you can insert the card in the card reader and it will mount on the desktop. From there you can drag and drop the files wherever you please. I do it this simply because I like to use multiple apps and don't want the RAW files sucked into a hidden folder.

What I want is to mount the card by plugging the camera in, not by using a reader. Thx.
