p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 7D err 50 with built-in flash

I have come across a relatively clean EOS 7D, works fine in all non-flash uses, but when the built-in flash is popped up it messages "busy" in the viewfinder followed by err 50, after which one has to switch off and on again the camera to bring it back to life. I have updated the firmware to 2.0.6, swapped out the original battery for a more recent compatible battery, to no avail. Obviously not worth the trouble (cost) of sending it in to Canon, so hoping some enthusiast with a really good memory would have a suggestion as to whether there is a user-doable fix, or the feature is dead.

I've been using an old 540EZ in manual and liking it. I've had pop up flashes fail it's a bit of a pain but idk if it's that bad really. Can fire off a lot even on the old flash, at a high rate depending on power, prefer it of course pop up is handy too, not sure how toxic some of the stuff in older flash units can be though

Even 580EX II potentially <$100, might just add an auxiliary flash if the hot shoe is good

Thanks for the comment Mike. Actually I am looking at selling it, and of course anything non-operational is by definition going to diminish the value of an already not-so-valuable item. It is a shame because for the rest the camera is very solid and performs well. I agree that the built-in flash is more of a distraction than of any use, I used similar flash units on other bodies like the Rebel or 40D, and with many lenses it failed to clear the lens hood. So indeed one is better served using a proper flash unit. I owned a 7D from 2010 to 2013, for sports and other action-related shooting, and as far as I recall I never once used the built-in flash unit.

I guess I didn't say that very clearly, I do find pop up flashes really handy, it is a bit of a pain if they quit working, but pretty easy to get an inexpensive older flash that's faster and more capable.

Too bad on the 7D, doesn't help the value any, easy to get around it though. Even the old 540EZ can be used at high fps.
