Just purchased a used version. It’s Pentax mount, so will try it with my K5iis
Also considering getting a adapter to use with focus peaking on my canon M bodies

Just wondered if any of you have experience of this lens. Not due to arrive until after the weekend. Obviously I’d love to have bought the latest canon version , but at the minute I can’t justify that kind of outlay.

Anyone??

I had the manual focus Adaptall-2 version 107B for a couple years in the 80s, then bought the 60B. At the time I thought they were good lenses. But it was a long time ago and I don't have a current reference for how they compare optically against Canon's equivalents. Also not sure how the AF version compares optically to the MF models I had.

Thanks for replying and for the link, just looked mine is the 60B, so it’s getting old now 😬
I already have a PK-EOS M adapter, just ordered the PK-RF too for my RP- £17 😂 so I’ll have a go at focus peaking. The lens was £300 so not exactly a fortune compared to what things cost now!!!
Supposedly works perfectly and seller confirms it’s sharp from 2.8 (he used it on Pentax but also adapted to lumix).

If it’s not, I’ll send it back…no harm

I do have the amazing EF 100-400Lii…fabulous…
But I’ve always wanted to see for myself just what a 300/2.8 looks like in comparison, but couldn’t justify paying out for the canon EF version…. Photography is just a hobby, I merely take random snaps, mostly delete and put away to try again another day Just a way to while away a few hours…. Suppose better than sat staring at the TV!!! 👍🏻

If the lens you bought is AF, then it's either the 60E or 360E model. 60B was manual focus and part of the Adaptall-2 interchangeable mount system. But on paper they all appear to be the same optical design with 7 groups, 10 elements and the same 2.5m minimum focusing distance.

The previous link is a non-Tamron site specifically about the Tamron Adaptall lenses. I found this Tamron Japan page, in Japanese, that links to all their older designs:

This is the link for their AF lenses made between 1987 and 2002:

Whatever the case, it will definitely provide you with a good introduction to the qualities of a 300mm f/2.8 lens in comparison to the two stops slower 100-400.

Thanks for that, much appreciated 👍🏻
Just checked, mine is the 60E, so 30 odd yrs old…Yikes!! 😬

Edit:- from what I’ve read the early versions were not LD. the LD supposedly was slightly sharper wide open, but much more contrasty.

I’ve had an alert, it maybe arriving tomorrow!!! 🤞

I used the 60B (Adaptall-2) and it was good but not great. It definitely had LD glass with low CA.
I was under the impression that the first AF version (60E) was basically the same optically with shaft drive AF. At the time in the early 90s there was the superior Canon EF 300/2.8 and then the 300/2.8 AF-I Nikkor in 1992. I was using the Sigma 300/2.8 AF in 1991, but the mechanicals were junk and service was terrible so I bit the bullet and got a used Nikkor that was better than either the Tamron or Sigma 300/2.8s.

Thanks 👍🏻

I’m trying to return it. It was listed as perfect working order!!
Out of the box the AF didn’t work and the camera refused to acknowledge it, no aperture control at all. The display just flashes F- - constantly.

Requested a return citing not as described/defective

Seller has just totally ignored it. Can’t do anything until a period of time has passed

But I’ll say this… my feedback will be devastating.
I’m confident I’ll get my money back once escalated by eBay.

IDK about that particular lens/camera combination, but many older 3rd party lenses don't have a very good record of compatibility with newer cameras. Some of the Sigma lenses required FW updates (rechipping) back in the early DSLR era for example.
