p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Setting up R5 for animal eye focus/tracking

I need some help in setting up my Canon R5 for hummingbird shots, finally got some coming into my feeder, but it seems I'm not ready to capture their beauty. I "think" I have my Animal Eye Focus setup, but when I'm shooting in my CF function that I setup for Manual settings, it seems the settings in that are overriding the animal eye focus setting. I'm not proud, I'll do whatever someone tells me to do to try and get better shots and shoot so that the Animal eye focus, at least as a chance to work, appreciate any help, Thanks

There are a number of good YouTube videos that describe how to set up the R5 for bird photography. Search for "Canon R5 setup bird" and look at the videos by Jan Wegener, Whistling Wings Photography, and WILD ALASKA.

Bob,

Here is a resource we used for setting up the R5 for birds/wildlife with eye tracking. Hope it helps.

Bob, you certainly don’t need to set up back button focusing, and if you don’t already use it things may get more confusing for you.

When set up properly the AF eye tracking will easily lock on and track the hummer’s eye by simply holding down the shutter button halfway.

As others have said, many YouTube videos showing how to set up.

If you are using a C mode (C1,2...), there are a couple of common places to get tripped up.

First, go to the mode you want to start with. Say manual mode, and set all your button functions and AF settings you want. Then register that to the C mode of your choice. If you later make a change while using that C mode, it will NOT save that change. The next time the camera sleeps, or powers back on after you shut it down it will go back to the original settings you saved to it.

There is another setting, I can't recall the exact name, to make it update settings that change while using the C function. I HATE that setting. I recommend turning it off. It literally saves everything and there is no way to revert. If that is set, it may be what is 'overrriding' your bird settings.

Thanks Brian, I may have been getting caught in it reverting back to my original settings
