There is a cover for the flash adapater on the R5 II that does not remove. There is a button, but it does not budge after about 10lb. and also pushing forward. I don't want to damage the camera, but there is no time to send it to Canon. There does not appear to be any way to control the flash wirelessly. In 50 years I never had a camera with such nonsense.

I believe this is the new multifunction shoe stuff that Canon seems to be pushing towards. Not sure why you can't get the cover off though I believe the complaint on the R3 was that it came off too easily.

Won't get my copy until tomorrow but will try to confirm the issue (or not).

I just took mine off using the method shown on this page.

Hahaha, it's definitely not easy to get it off, but you'll get it figured out.

Once it moves the least little bit, abandon the "button" and just push the cover. After 2-3 tries it gets much easier.

I read the manual and tried many times. Some kind of cheap plastic latch is probably to tight and maybe already damaged. The old ones just slopped on/off. The whole new flash shoe design is very poorly though out. They should have developed a faster serial design without the need for all those contacts.
I just hope Canon service does not have to take the camera apart and mess it up. I don't need the flash until 2025, but I really wanted to use the GPS. Fortunately I only bought one of these cheesy cameras.

Somebody locally will try to help me. If it does come off, can the older slip-on kind be used like with the R7?

It's a pain in the ass and yes, the R7 one is much easier & what I will be using (I have a bucket of them for my R3).

It took me several attempts (as in 5 -1 10 frustrating minutes). Push the button then push hard to slide it forward (toward the eye cup). Once it moves a little bit, try prying it upwards from the lens side and continuing pushing towards the eye cup.

Once I finally got it off, the cap goes back on and off easily

Just spray a little WD-40 on it.

How flush is it supposed to sit when inserted? I did not take note when I first opened the box prior to removing it.

There a noticeable but small gap all around, which I suspect could lead to less obvious water ingress. Will have to make a mental note to remove the cover so it properly dries out if I'm ever out in rainy conditions.

Keep working on it. It took me much longer than I thought the first time.

It is finally off, but probably not ever going back on again.

Mine wasn't difficult to remove. I just place my index finger nail at the front of the button (not on top of the button) and pulled back and it came off.

I can get mine off relatively easy now. The technique is to pull the button toward you (the back of the camera) while pulling on the two sides in the same direction. I was formerly trying to push the button in...this does nothing very useful.

Can be tricky.
I have the EL-5 flash and DM-E1D mic that I use with it.
If you have the old cover from R3, Can use that instead.

These guys have a hard time removing it too:
