I find that rarely shoot longer than 50 mm anymore, interested in people’s recommendation for some great portrait lenses in the 50 mm range. Will be shot mostly from WO to F2.8

Can be ancient or new, AF or MF, DSLR or RF or ILC. Will be shooting on a7x line.

And, no interest in the 50/1.2 or 1.4 GMs, the ZA 55 or ZA 50/1.4 (e-mount).

I have used a Minolta Rokkor 58mm 1.2 (converted to Sony A/FE mount) that I really like. But you may have used one in the past if I remember correctly.

Haha, the Rokkor 58/1.2 and C-Sonnar are the two lenses Nehemiah recommended to me and I bought them both eventually after trying to decide between one or the other. Really lovely lenses for portraits.

For vintage lenses the Canon 50/1.4 LTM is another fabulous portrait lens; I'd also recommend the Nikon 50/1.4 Ai-S.

Did you already try the CV 50 f1 for FE?

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1869246/

Please buy it so I don't lol

I use CV 50/2 APO on Nikon Z8. It is outstanding! It is available for Sony as well. I also heard only good things about CV 50/1.2. These CV lenses have electrical contacts, so you will get a focus assist and shooting data.

Have you tried the Otus 55/1.4? It's a kilo of greatness if you don't mind dragging it around.

I'm currently enamored with the MD 50/2. It's a little $15 hockey puck of happiness that's a solid all-arounder. Also the Nikon AF 50/1.4D is another inexpensive sweetheart.

What are you looking for man- I've been in your closet-

You already have an amazing 50/1 Noct. You just looking for something new to try?

Have you give the 50 Lux Pre-ASPH V3 a shot?

I am tracking down a Nikon 5.8 cm 1.4 . Really unique look to that one that appeals to me.

If you can wait until October, Artra Lab is launching their Nocty-Nonikkor 50/1.2 for Sony. I don't know about the optics, but the lens itself is a thing of beauty.

A few of my favorites, some already mentioned:

Minolta – SR mount (MD/MC/Rokkor/etc.):
58 1.2 – The Portrait King™, a bit front heavy adapted to mirrorless
50 1.2 – very small and light lens, has some nice vintage edge swirl especially for foreground bokeh

Light Lens Lab – M mount:
50 f/2 Speed Panchro II – the only 50mm I've seen with the "Leica glow" of the Leica 35/1.4 pre-ASPH v2; glow increases with distance

Zeiss – Contax C/Y mount:
50 f/1.4 – another small gem with more structured bokeh; good contrast and Zeiss color

@ocean2059 Good memory--owned it several times. Great lens.

@AndereObjektiv I loooove the ZM 50/1.5. Don't have a copy currently, but will get one again. Have posted many photos with it.

@bjhurley I shot to 50/1.5 Ai-s about a decade ago, enjoyed it but didn't love it. But, I have never shot the LTM 50/1.4--I should give that a try. Good rec Brad!

@ftllens I did shortly after launch! Not quite my cup of tea, but really neat for what it is

@olegkin Interesting--I would not have considered the 50/2 APO for portraits. Might not do wonders for skin and whatnot though...

@freaklikeme I was hoping you'd chime in with something unexpected. I had and really enjoyed a MD 50/2 about 10 years ago, but it was stolen. Funny though, I used it more as a landscape and urban lens, not portrait. At the current prices, maybe I'll grab it again. And never shot that 50/1.4 D--it will go on the list. Btw, I still have the Mino 100/2.8 Macro you recommended a couple years back. Great lens, dirt cheap. Ergo sucks as an MF lens, but worse things have happened to better people.

And I wait for reviews on all these 3rd party Leica rip-off Chinese lenses...and yet I am hopefully lol

@RustyRus Yes, just want to poke the hive mind and see what falls out. Hoping for a couple new lenses to try and put on my radar. I have been curious about the CM 5.8 1/4 for a bit on and off--we'll re-investigate. Thanks for the rec!

@highdesertmesa I have owned the older lenses, but never the LLL. Very curious about this. Thanks for bringing it up James!

There are a lot of lenses that fit this bill. I know you have used a Minolta Rocker 58 f/1.2 and that is a good choice, but I have also had the Canon FD 55 f/1.2 Asph with the hand polished aspherical and I actually slightly preferred the Canon FD Asph.

There are many choices, however. I am still a big fan of the Leica 50 f/1.4 Asph even though I no longer have that lens. It had a lovely balance of attributes.

I have always wanted to try the Leica R 50 f/1.4 with the 60mm filter threads (I had the version with the 55mm filter threads and didn't find it that special), and the Nikon 58 f/1.2 Noct Nikkor, but have never used them. There is also the Contax C/Y 55 f/1.2 that looks intriguing, but I have never even seen pictures from that lens. I did have the Otus 55 f/1.4 for a time and it was better than I expected it to be, but it was just so damn big I didn't use it that much.

Those are my thoughts for now, I also think you are a wonderful judge of lenses, so I would love to hear what you decide in the end and what you think of the various lenses. I am sorry if the Sony/Zeiss 50 f/1.4 ZA I sold you put you off that lens. It is rather large, but I always liked it.

Not at all Steve--I quite like the ZA 50/1.4 and will be keeping it. I couple it with my GM 24, and I find it's great. Just made a short video with it too--that lens has juice. I just like trying new/different glass. And the size is large enough where I am not using it all the time. I have never been wowed by the R50/1.4, nor really the Noct 58/1.2. I had forgotten about FD 55/1.2. It's been a good several years since I saw that lens mentioned.

I have nearly purchased CY 50 and 85/1.2's over the years, except I am never too crazy about the samples I have seen, though limited. I still remain interested in the 85/1.2 more the 50 though.

Of all the modern fast 50's (still in production), I like the 50 Lux and ZA 50 and ZM 50/1.5 best. That Lux is a winner.

More rec's please everyone!

The other modern 50, I didn't mention that I also like is the Voigtlander 50 f/1.2. It reminds me a bit of the Leica 50 lux Asph, although quite a bit bigger.

The Zeiss C/Y 55 f/1.2 anniversary lens has always intrigued me partly because it isn't that old of a lens. It was actually produced in 1996 (so only a decade older than the Leica 50 lux Asph) and the inclusion of a floating element makes it novel among the 50ish Zeiss C/Y lenses and then they only made a 1,000 of them so they are rare and it is rare to even see photos with one of lenses and they didn't even publish the MTF graphs for the lens like Zeiss usually does. All that to me anyway ups the intrigue--not enough to spend the $5,000 to $6,000 it takes to actually get a copy--but I have to admit I am quite curious about the lens.

The 7Artisans 50 1.1 is like a better ZM 50 1.5…yeah I said that (owned both). Wide open the 1.1 is old school Hollywood glam factory, and it sharpens up stopped down.

One stop faster than the original Biotar 58. Could be interesting but I haven’t seen many real world reviews / reports. Not a cheap lens unfortunately..

Many years ago I shot a lot with the Xenotar or the Planar on Rolleis. They are sharp. Personally, I'd love to shoot portraiture on the LLL Cooke remake now.

The two lenses I have in this range that I’d grab specifically for portraits are:
- TTArtisan 50 1.4 - cheap, available in most mounts, really nice bokeh across a variety of backgrounds/distances.
- Voigtlander 50mm 1.5 II - small, sharp, high-ish mechanical vignetting can add a bit of swirl w/o going overboard like a Helios.
