EOS R5 MKII availability in Canada?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · EOS R5 MKII availability in Canada?

Against probably my better judgment, i decided to pre-order the EOS R5Mk II yesterday (before the cashback rebate ended) - even though i am VERY disappointed they didn't increase the MP to the 60-65mp range..

It was more of a decision to bite the bullet on the 100-500 lens - since I can't use a TC with the RF70-200 f2.8, and makes the camera price a bit better with the $500 cashback on the lens.

Anyway, i see the camera seems widely available to order in the USA from the big brick and morter shops like B&H and Adorama. Canada seems to be a badly back-ordered. I just ordered both the lens and camera from Camera Canada and looks like mid-September at the earliest - may be too late for my Tetons trip.

Camera Store in Calgary said they have no idea, but I'd probably be in the third to 4th batch of deliveries.

Anyone have any better luck in Canada with pre-orders?

Do you need an adaptor to use EL-1 flash wit the R5 MKII

Other question i have is any idea on L-Bracket choices and availability? I've got an RRS with the battery grip and a small rig for without the grip for the R5., but haven't seen any availability yet for the MKII.

I'll probably sell the grip for my R5 and the RRS bracket for it - any advise on pricing?

My friend didn't order till either late in the 1st day or maybe not till the day after.
She was told she was ~45th in line at CC.
Today she called and texted them and was first told they got in about 70 but not sure if she would get one out of the first batch. I assume they had prioritized CPS members as they have in the past and that is why even 70 cameras wouldn't cover #45 regular customer.
But in the end they got one for her and shipped it today so that worked out.

But yeah, I checked all online stores in Canada and didn't find any with stock. Where as Adorama was letting me add 10+ and checkout this morning. B&H is sold out of body only now but expects more in 2 days according to the website.

Camera Canada told my friend that it would be 2 weeks for next batch.

I would not sell the L-plate for the R5. As far as I understand the L-plate will fit R5 II since from a mechanical point of view the grips are compatible.

No. I use my 600EX-RT units on my R6II, which has the same new multi-function shoe as the R5II. There is an adapter but AFAIK, it's sole purpose is to fully weather seal the connection.

I placed an order from Camera Canada today. They said there next shipment is mid-September. I'm hoping it comes in time for my Yellowstone/Tetoms trip. Hopefully I get the camera and 100-500 lens in time for the rebate form deadline!
Camera store in Calgary said they have next 3-4 batches spoken for.

My L-plate is for the gripped R5, and I'm going to sell the battery grip. Going to go without a grip for the first time in over 30 years!

I'll be able to play with the camera this Friday morning as I've promised to help my friend set it up (wish me luck as it has been a long time since I've had to setup a Canon camera).
But I will only have access to the 100-500 so I realize any impressions I get from the camera could be different if I had a faster lens like RF600/4.
After this Friday, I may get a chance to shoot it some more over the next few weeks but still only the 100-500. There aren't any local Canon shooters that use the big primes. They all have lenses like 100-500 or 200-800. All the big prime shooters around here use Sony and a couple Nikon guys.
Once the R1 is readily available I will probably renew my CPS Platinum membership so I can "test drive" an R1, R5II and RF600/4 (or RF400/2.8) and the TCs.

So I hope I can shoot some swallows on Friday with the R5II/100-500 but even that isn't for sure. I won't have the time to go after diving Osprey or KFs that morning. It may just be birds in the bush

Please for the love of god try to do some BIF work. I'm itching to hear what the experience is compared to the R5.
Looking forward to hearing your first impressions! As bias as they may be.

I've never heard of Camera Canada before. Is this a reputable company?

Yes. I and six or more of my friends buy all our gear there. One reason I started buying from there is that they don't have a BC PST number so I save 7% compared to buying in BC. They are located in Ontario. I've gotten unmatched customer service from them over the past 10 years.

A couple years ago I had a phone conversation with the Sony Canada rep and he told me Camera Canada was the #1 seller of Sony in Canada (especially higher end stuff).

Camera Canada is also a sponsor for Jan Wegener and Glenn Bartleys Bird Photography Show on YT. Also a sponsor of Camera Conspires YT channel.

I'll certainly be able to find some BIF to shoot, just not sure if the swallows will be out in numbers. Maybe some killdeer, certainly some crows, maybe some other small sandpipers.
I doubt I'll come to any great conclusions about overall AF for BIF but I should certainly be able to answer your question about how it is while panning and firing on a BIF compared to R5. My friend will have her R5 along also so I can hopefully do a quick back to back comparison as it has been a good while since I used an R5 or R3.

I've bought quite a few lenses, camera and accessories from them since going R/RF. They also give discounted pricing for new gear.

Is the discounted pricing on their site?

No. You need to try and call or email and ask if they can do better than retail pricing. If that doesn't work you could name drop "The Bird Photography Show with Glenn and Jan" on YouTube as they do advertise CameraCanada and say to mention the show to "be taken care of"....whatever that means.

I will say when you've been shopping there for years and spending 10s of thousands they increase the discounts. Even my friend who has spent 10s of 1000s but just not as many 10s of 1000s as I have was offered less of a discount on the Sony 300GM recently than I was.

So as a new customer you can probably expect a few % taken off even brand new items. Maybe more on things they have sitting in stock and want to move. I'd say the most you'd expect is 5% (basically save the GST). I get a bit more than that depending on what it is but not a lot more.

Another store that will almost always discount is Aden Camera...on their website they mention to "ask for MAP"..."Magnificent Aden Pricing" and that usually means they will discount once you email them again maybe 5% or so but they don't advertise the lower prices (they probably aren't allowed to).

In early 2023 I was at Pacific Mall in north Toronto and wandered by Aden Camera's location there, surprised to see the amount of high end gear they had in stock. Having never been a previous customer of their's, the clerk offered me great prices on the spot for several RF L series lenses I was interested in. However, he did explain they don't extend these discounts to just released items that are in high demand, so doubt you'd be able to swing it for the R5II. Maybe in a year.

Canon, and likely many other manufacturers, have policies that require retailers to abide by minimum advertised prices. Retailers can sell for less, but they're just not allowed to show it on their websites.

Is there any reason someone in Canada, especially if living on or near the border, cannot simply take a short trip to the U.S. and buy an R5 II?

No reason you can't if you can drive across. B&H and I believe other stores won't ship new Canon gear to Canada anymore. They used to. I bought my 5DIII from B&H way back when.
