p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · How well does the Canon RF 10-20mm F4 L IS STM resist flare and ghosting?

My only experience with lenses that have a protruding front element is the Panasonic 7-14mm f/4. That lens was horrible when it came to resisting flares. I haven't used another lens like that since. Obviously, a lot has changed in the decade-plus since the release of that lens. So how well does the Canon 10-20mm resist flare and ghosting? Is the Canon 10-20mm good enough for interior architectural shots, especially at night and with the lights on and coming from all directions? The safe bet would be to go with the Canon 14-35mm, but I lose 4mm.

Is the Canon 10-20mm also decent for shooting movies since it has an STM motor?

I love to shoot the 10-20 straight into the sun, as a matter of fact. It creates beautiful sun stars and very minimal flare.

That's pretty impressive. So what did Canon do to minimize flare despite having a protruding front element?

I think some fancy coatings and "modern lens design." Works for me at least.

I left the flares uncorrected, should be very easy to clone out in most cases.

Christopher Frost tests against flare conditions in all his lens reviews. If you just want to see the part about flare, fast forward to 8:11.

Nice shots! Those sunstars are gorgeous. Shame about the R5 sensor reflections though, I've had a few otherwise nice shots semi-spoiled by them.

Believe it or not, most of those artifacts near the sun are due to dust on the surface of the lens. This doesn't happen at longer focal lengths -- dust on the lens or lens elements is too far out of the plane of focus to show up in the final image. But at ultrawide focal lengths, coupled with smaller apertures, and with the sun actually within the frame, dust particles on the lens surface can cause visible artifacts like that.

You can demonstrate this to yourself by shooting the same image a few times, gently brushing or blowing the dust off the lens in between shots.

Most of the spots are dust sure, but the second shot has pretty clear sensor reflections in it. I've seen the exact same pattern when shooting into the sun, which I also like to do.
