Hello all. I have a guy selling his 400/2.8 IS II for a good price and have been researching this lens's IQ with a 2x III. As it stands I have an EF 800/5.6 already plus a 400 DO II. The latter lens is 'okay' with the 2x but I'm definitely curious how the 400/2.8 would fare with the 2x. I'm really intrigued as the MFD is under nine feet (nearly 20' with my 800L) and the lens would be far more versatile (400/2.8, 560/4, 800/5.6). I'm so intrigued I am wondering if the 400/2.8 could replace my 800. I have searched the EXIF galleries here as well as checked flickr and various other sites, but was wondering if anyone could chime in with their thoughts and samples with this combo. I'm less interested in the EF III or RF versions, as I don't have a lead for one at such a great price (yeah, those weight savings have me salivating). I certainly am not expecting the 400 2.8 to be as sharp as the 800 but again, I am wondering just how close it could be.

I'll take a look at that when I'm at a better monitor, but I also was curious for some real-world outdoor usage rather than test charts. But thank you for chiming in!

Jared I had the 400 IS I version and tried to use it with the 2X for birds (which I know you also do) and was never happy with the focus speed ( even on1D bodies). Now I know that II version is much supposed to be much faster focusing, but will you be happy with that speed? The other consideration is that when you don't have the 2X on you will probably need the 1.4x, unless you're going to use a cropper you are only at 560mm. I still have the 300 2.8 which does reasonably well with the 2X, but when you are shooting something like Warblers your % of keepers will drop. If you're going to shoot bigger subjects it probably not as much of an issue. As has been said for years on FM a 1.4x is generally a non issue, but 2x is really pushing the technology. My opinion, YMMV.
