It seems a few members already have their hands on the R5II. I'm hoping they might be able to provide some early insight here.

-Is IBIS wobble fixed with lenses like the 15-35mm f2.8?
-Is stabilization in video with long lenses improved?
-Is animal eye AF and tracking in video improved?
-Is dynamic range in CLOG2 improved vs CLOG3 in the R5?
-How well does preburst work?
-How is real world high ISO performance?(12800)

The press releases made it clear that the R1 supported RAW precapture, and that the R5II supported precapture, but it didn't mention RAW precapture for the R5II. Can anyone with an R5II confirm whether it supports pre-continuous shooting when capturing RAW images?

As far as I know, none of the other major camera brands support RAW precapture, so this is a big advantage for Canon, especially if the R5II supports it in addition to the R1.

OM Digital OM-1 (and other models) support pre-capture of up to 70 frames in RAW, Sony A9 III up to 1 second.

I don't have the R5II until next week (hopefully) but yes, pre-shooting supports RAW. However simultaneous video + photo shooting is JPEG only and FPS is limited to 7.5 FPS. The manual also sets out other limitations when shooting in this mode.

I asked Jan Wegener if the R5II was in RAW and he confirmed with his friend that had the camera that it was. This was way back on announcement day/week and my only confusion was DPReview's article stated jpeg only precapture on the R5II. But every video I've watched since then has said RAW for precapture.

I'd be devastated if it couldn't capture raw with precapture. I'd maybe get an A9III instead if that were the case.

Talked with TX canon rep in person yesterday, FWIW
-Is animal eye AF and tracking in video improved?
He could not comment specifically on what all AF has improved, but said all AF for all modes is an substantial improvement.

-How well does preburst work?
Quite well - the shutter button has to be pressed half way, menu settings setup for it to work, new battery being used. It works in Video mode also, 3s and 5s options. Unfortunately for those of us that use back button for focusing, we will still need to half press the shutter button to get the preburst to work, they dont have a way to remap it to any other button

-How is real world high ISO performance?(12800)
There is a specific thread here that I would suggest you to review

Nearly all other camera brands offer one or more models with RAW pre-capture; Nikon is the only one that doesn't (and I'm not sure about Ricoh).

I'm beginning to think that DPReview must be part of the Sony Rumors media conglomerate... since they seem to have the same difficulty guessing correctly.

Andreas is quite busy hiking the alps most of the time. Give the guy a break. At least it beats the constant mental breakdowns over at CR and useless rumors as well.

I haven't noticed any difference in the amount of useless rumours at either site, to be honest... at least CR spends a little less time trying to promote useless crap in return for kickbacks.

Thank you. Will R5 screen protectors fit the R5II?

It is raw (unless you shoot in jpeg), individual files, no marker, always 0.5 s, you can’t adjust it, and you can’t assign a button to turn it off and on. So it’s there but with some limitations. I hope Canon will improve usability via a firmware update.

With low inventory of the new battery, I was worried that the R5II didn't support USB PD. Even though it doesn't show the PD icon like the R5C did when I plug in my 60W power bank, I was able to record 4k 24 fine for 15 mins with the battery level staying put at 39%. Doing the same recording for 7 mins WITHOUT the power bank caused the batter to drop from 39 to 31%.

I have my m-fn button set to quickly switch between the custom modes, but when I go into a mode that has heat limitations like 4k 120, I get the warning pop up message that the camera may shutdown because of heat. That message is very obstrusive and I get it every time I go in a heat limited custom mode. Does any one know of any way to bypass it?

I thought someone reported that you could assign a button to toggle pre-capture on-off using reg / recall? Is this not true?

The best way to do this may be thru the Q menu.

The OMS OM-1 MkI and MkII have RAW pre-capture and it is much better implemented than the Canon version. With the OM-1 I can specify the total number of frames, how many frames to store before the shutter is pushed and how many frames are shot after. All in RAW.

My understanding is that you have to go into the menu and select enable pre capture.

Further my understanding is that you cannot program a button to toggle on and off.

There are now a number of items I will be juggling when shooting, landscape EFCS vs wildlife electronic, FPS max, CRAW vs Raw, precapture vs not, ... . And there are only 3 still C1,C2, C3

Which leaves you with several possible solutions.

1) Create a favourite menu with fps, craw on/off, precapture on/off, fps, format ... and leave it as your last item opened on your menu when you are shooting wildlife
2) Program C1 to be precapture, C2 to be non precapture etc. fps
3) Do it manually as needed off/on
4) Program a button to bring up the precapture on/off option - I think this can be done
5) You could have a different C1,C2,C3 depending on intent - load them on your card and upload them depending on your goals
6) Buy multiple camera - one for landscape and one for wildlife so that you have two still C1,C2,C3 (keep my R5 and get a bigger camera case that houses my r8, r5, R5ii, and R7 pending).

I am planning to do 1. There are now so many options - CRAWvsRaw, Eye vs spot, PreCapture or not, fps. And I won't use them much so if I put them in one favourite menu - it will be easy to remember. As well I use my camera for Landscape and Wildlife and have C1, C2, C3 programmed to C1 - On Tripod, iso100, EFCS, f11, AEB... C2 Electronic, AEB, AutoISO, F8 and C3 - RAW, continuous, spot focus, non precapture, 15fps. I will duplicate the C1,C2,C3 in Favourites. I won't remember special buttons in the heat of the moment anyway. There is an option to change c1 (c2,c3) when you make any changes permanently - I won't do this because it risks being in the wrong mode in the heat of the moment, when a Sasquatch comes out of the bush for 1/2 s.
