p.2 #1 · R5 EVF vs R5ii real world comparison

Today I had the opportunity to tryout the R5 MkII EVF. My initial reaction was Wow.

But while trying to calibrate the eye focus, the reality returned. The calibration only worked without my bifocal transition glasses. Without glasses, the calibration only worked if I kept my eyes further away from the EVF. In this position I had problems to oversee the whole screen.

Maybe my problems are associated with my blue eyes. For the sales rep without glasses and dark Iris the calibration went super smooth.

When using the calibrated eye focus I had to always remind myself to stop my eye movement.

I have bifocals too, transitions at that. Eye Control calibration worked right off the bat. Using it extensively now on vacation and it is amazing. Recommend that you try the calibration again. I have dark pupils and cornea, if that helps

The original R5 does drop refresh rate in low light but you can turn it off using a Custom Setting. I believe that is true for all Canon EVFs. Not sure about resolution.

I have definitely noticed this. I believe it is a side effect of exposure simulation, and dark conditions where the shutter speed would be less than the refresh rate by a sufficient margin to be noticeable to the human eye (30-60hz).

I recently tried an R3 but did not think to compare in this particular scenario. At some point, physics is physics and becomes a limitation so it could definitely be true for all EVFs out there.

The R5 is a great camera. I have one, and the new R5 MKII. I have had glare in the viewfinder of my old R5 when the sun was 3/4 behind me. Have not shot in that condition with the new one yet, but I would expect the same.
Good luck with your decision, you can't go wrong.

Aftermarket eye cup solves the problem. Cheap fix, don't remember which one I bought though. I use an r5. Jp

After a few outings, the AF for people & sports is clearly is outstanding and a major upgrade over R5. Just came back from another cross country meet and the camera does what I want it to do, lock in, stay locked in, easy to switch when I want to move the focus. Its a sports winner and by a wide margin.

Now wildlife, I am not seeing any significant improvement. It hunted for the eyes of deer/birds on both outings, was jumpy and I miss-fired often enough in low light conditions that it is not a "major" upgrade. Now R5 was plenty good, and perhaps eye control would become something I start appreciating for wildlife in the upcoming trip to bear Disneyland next month. IQ at ISO 12800 is similar to R5 as well, so while I was hoping to get 1/2 - 1 stop better sensor quality in DR, it is a lateral move. I have not tried video AF yet, hearing good things about it from YouTubers, so we shall see.
