It seems like Sony is going down that path with its G Master series. Canon's L-series lenses all top at 9 aperture blades. Do you guys feel Canon should match Sony?

The point of additional aperture blades, where it comes to bokeh is to form a more perfect circle.

"L-series lenses usually have 9 or 10 blades. Non-L-series lenses mostly have 7 blades
To ensure rounder bokeh even at narrower apertures, many professional grade (L-series) RF and EF lenses have 9 or even 10."
https://snapshot.canon-asia.

I guess the point is, how much difference would 11 blades make over 9 or 10?
Would there be any significant tradeoffs?
Would a re-design result in a significant price VS the improved perception.

Canon also employs Defocus Smoothing lens which softens the bokeh ‘discs’ in blurred backgrounds.

Or if possible, and if they haven't already done so, Canon could optimize the shape of the blades to be more curved at wider aperture settings where bokeh disk shape is more of a concern. IIRC that was one of the improvements applied to the EF 85/1.2L v2 over its predecessor.

11 vs. 8 or 9 blades is an easy spec-sheet win because more is always better when superficially skimming through the specs.

The Canon RF 35mm F1.4L VCM lens has 11 blades.

Perhaps some others do, or will have, as well?

I'm holding out for 14-blade apertures - anything less than that is utterly useless for taking photos.

The star effect (radial spikes) you usually see around the sun at sunrise/sunset or from bright lights at night in your photos, without a special effects filter, will have the same number of points as the even number of aperture blades in a lens and 2x the number of points as blades for odd number of aperture blades in a lens. Example: 8 blades produces 8 spikes, 9 blades will have 18 spikes and 11 blades will have 22 spikes.

I suppose that this could influence a purchase decision for someone? For me it does not.

I would hope they have more important things to do to be honest.

I love my sunstars and smooth specular highlights so I always want more blades. But I'm not going to suggest all lenses should get an update just for this reason. I would just hope that new lenses get the maximum sensible and feasible number of blades.

It cracks me up how some people can't help but blow a simple and balanced request out of proportion. I get the feeling if I asked for a salt shaker at a restaurant because I wanted more salt on my fries, they would sneer and then dump the whole shaker on it, because "anything less than the whole shaker is clearly not enough salt".

Mo blades mo betta!

Careful what you wish for.
With many aperture blades, 11 or more, it is very difficult to get nice sunstars at all.

Yep, and then I have to go back to all the places I shot to finally get good images of those subjects.

From what I can tell it's usually the same few posters on just about every thread. It's like they get notifications when someone is not kissing the ring or worshipping their brand of choice. Seriously, to be a fly on the wall to see what these people look like and do for a living would be interesting.

Why not reserve that project for when all lenses get de-clickable aperture rings

At least molson is witty, but that does not work for everybody.

I've noticed that the people who hide their location and any other details about themselves always seem to be the most sincere and insightful contributors, too...

What's the old adage, the loudest usually don't have much of anything useful to say? I suppose if you're going for sheer numbers and fanfare with a handful of regulars that spend much of their days on the forum, you guys have that nailed.

I don’t see Canon releasing new lenses just to match a choice made by Sony, but if purchasing trends point in that direction (or are requested by their users), it would just be another design consideration as they develop new lenses, especially if they continue their push into the video/cinema market. We used 11 bladed lens today, and while that’s not really why we chose them, it was a nice plus.

I prefer no spikes but apparently I'm in the minority. Cosina made an interesting design choice for a couple of their Voigtlander lenses. The aperture shape is perfectly round at some of the stopped down settings, but not at others. This gives users the choice between having sunstars/spikes or not. I'd love to see this implemented by other manufacturers, including Canon.
