Years ago, I had the Canon 200 f/2L IS, 300mm f/2.8L IS and 400mm f/4.0 DO IS. While the 400 was mostly an outdoor lens, I used the shorter lenses at indoor event venues a lot, and grew tired of dealing with the ridiculous sized hoods. (This was before options like the Zemlin short hoods existed.)
I found this flexible but sturdy plastic drainpipe coupler at my local Home Depot:

It turns out it perfectly slipped over the rubberized portion of the front lens barrels on all these lenses and butted up against the metal "lip".
I cut it down to a 2" length, wrapped the front rim with a strip of gaffer's tape (to give it a more finished appearance and hand feel). It made a perfect short hood.
When I was packing for a gig, I would fasten it snuggly to the lens with a strip of gaffer's tape around the base, load it into my Domke long lens bag and off I went. It was honestly great.
Sadly, it is just a smidge too small to affix to my new 100-300 in the same manner. But if you are a bit handy, you may consider trying something similar.
