Not sure if this has been discussed
Does anyone know if canon intends to bring out a R replacement for the discontinued M6ii.

Just that really

The R7 would be the nearest thing with a similar 32MP APS-C CMOS. If you mean sans viewfinder video blogger style soap bar camera—I don't think anybody but Canon knows that. However, it wouldn't surprise me if a soap bar model appears to appease the deluxe webcam/v-blogger market. On the next refurb sale I wouldn't mind a R50 mounted on a stick above my Mac.

Yes ‘soap bar’ was what I was referring too
Recently bought the pancake 28 for my RP and I’d love a much smaller aps-c body without EVF. I find the EVF on my M cameras too small, likewise my older SL1/2 are also too small unlike the 7d/7dii I have. Guessing the aps-c R bodies are roughly the same size as the M & SL series bodies they replaced? I’d sooner just go without….which is odd as I tend not to use the rear screen for composing but as I say the tiny EVF frustrates me enormously. Currently using the RP in crop mode…. Wonderful, but a little too big.

To add, we're not likely to see anything that small; especially not something as small as the smallest EOS-M bodies. The mount is unfortunately larger and deeper (which I'm sure you know).

Still, I could see a market for such a camera; or several, one actually minimized in size and one with IBIS. I'd definitely like to see something smaller than the R7 that retains IBIS, even if functionality were reduced (so long as cost followed).

I’ve replaced my M6II with the R8+28mm. Not as compact, but still easy to pack and stash.

A super compact RXX body, same form factor as the M and M2, could definitely have its use for streamers and vloggers going for the smallest form factor. I enjoy the R50 as a tiny backup to my R7, but if it was even smaller that would give it a better reason to exist IMO.

I had the M6II, but I couldn't wean myself from using a viewfinder. After adding the EVF-DC2, the package was bulkier and fiddlier in use. (I actually use on-camera fill-flash sometimes in contrasty outdoor conditions, which was an obvious challenge with the M6II if you use an EVF).

As far as small APS-C models go, I think the R50 is the closest approximation to an M5II that currently exists with minimum viable quality.

Unfortunately for me, I find that all Canon APS-C models other than the R7 have too-small EVFs. I tried the R10 but could not warm up to the small viewfinder and dinky controls.

I eventually landed on the R8. The lack of an AF joystick is not ideal, and some lenses are bulkier, but everything else including IQ is nicer. It's my current travel camera.

I’d love a R8, it’s the only R model that appeals. But I can’t justify the outlay for something to haul about taking random snaps when out with family.
I’ll stick with my RP & 28, I might even consider getting it fixed (scratched sensor).

I still have my M6ii

Maybe Canon should do a full frame version. R8 sensor, flip up screen, optional viewfinder via hot shoe, please add IBIS this time. A fast focusing f/2-ish 85mm prime without a huge magnification factor so it can be truly compact (leave out ILIS as the body has IBIS to go even more compact) would be great as well. Thát 85mm + the 50mm&28mm pancake on a full frame M6II style body would be nice - in my opinion.

IBIS will likely add a centimeter of thickness to the body

Actually that’s a good idea..
A full frame similar to the M200/M6ii with RF mount, and silent stutter would be great paired with either 16, 28 or 50mm as a walkabout street/family camera .

That's the price you'll have to pay when going RF anyway, IBIS or not.

The M6II is 49mm. The R8 is 70mm. Both lack IBIS. The R8 the most compact full frame RF option. If we drop the full frame requirement there's the R50, but that's 69mm, virtually the same as the R8, still no IBIS.

The A7CII is 63mm. Yes, adds more than a centimetre compared to the M6II, but it's full frame and stabilized, and stabilization is a relatively compact way of collecting more light compared to bigger lenses or tripods.

The A7CII + RF 28mm f/2.8 stm would be a match in heaven, but that's too good to be true obviously. Like the M6II - and unlike the R8 - the A7CII has all the dials. The R8 and the R50 are both nice cameras, but the A7CII shows there's scope for improvement.

I meant the thickness without the grip, the distance between the mount and the back LCD. That’s 43mm on the R8 and 36mm on the M6II. The IBIS equipped models add about a centimeter to that.

Honestly I would happily forego ibis, managed fine with lens based IS if needed.

It’s not going to happen, canon clearly want buyers to move up to a “” FF Eco-System”” asap, a pocketable (??) FF compact ‘soap bar’ is for an entirely different type of photographer complete with an entirely different mindset- think phone user.

The 28mm on a ff soap bar giving 45mm in crop mode would be amazing for travel, street, family. Like wise the 16mm & 50mm would give 25mm & 80mm via crop mode. Or even the much maligned 24-50 ( 😂 ) if they could just increase the maximum aperture.. 6.3 anyone?? 😂😂😂

Imagine a FF soap bar with built in flash?? The type found on the M200 where you can tilt back for bounce… oh my 💕💕 maybe with a hot shoe too so you could add a EVF if you wanted.
Hmm Yum Yum basically a Full Frame M6ii. Yes please !!
