I think I would stop visiting any Leica store or site after them doing that.

I recall years ago with one early M240 where the Leica cable release would not stay screwed into the threads. I was in Germany and went direct to Customer Service in the old location. I met with an older man who seemed to be extremely well informed and he told me all was OK. He then began to use a very old cable release in order to show me that the shutter worked just fine. Even though the Leica cable would not hold in place he told me to get an old cable release. In Frankfurt I went to a store and bought some old cable releases of different lengths. It still irritated me that a Leica cable release would not hold or work on a Leica Camera.

Many months later I read there was a recall of certain model numbers since the manufacturer of the shutter/cable release had sent Leica defective parts. I sent mine into NJ and got it replaced, but that experience began to leave a bad taste in my mouth with Leica products. Stupidly I have kept buying the M.

FWIW I was following a thread on the l-camera-forum started by somebody who had a terrible experience with a new film M that involved multiple long trips to Wetzlar without any fix and the company/dealer washing their hands of it. That thread also got zapped without trace in the last few days.

Edit - I of course have no idea of whether the situation described by that person was exactly as he put it, or whether there was a real life version where Leica looked a lot better, but simply deleting unflattering content is not a good look. And yes, of course that forum isn’t owned nor run by Leica, I realise that.

Just took a look on LUF and there is no mention of this issue. Wonder if Leica discourages posts that are negative to the company.

I've been on the LUF for 20 years and over at least the past five years there have been numerous threads about repair turnaround time. I've participated in a few and actually started one. I know for a fact that Leica management reads threads on the LUF. Unfortunately, none of this has changed the situation.

Threads do get deleted, however, as "Leica bashing," is generally not permitted. My biggest gripe with that forum is the degree of censorship and heavy moderating that is characteristic.

I believe it after my experience where I got a letter from the head of Leica M division, who while was apologetic about my camera scratching film, also mentioned that I should feel very lucky to having been able to buy a new M6 as they were in high demand.

FYI I only got the letter from him because a Leica ambassador reached out to him after i showed him that his camera also scratched film.

As long as sales do not suffer, they don’t care about customer service.

I did email him back and chewed him out about service times and also mentioned those signed QC check cards were a running joke.
He sent me a reply saying he appreciated my candidness (doubtful) and that was the last I heard. Seeing that repair times now are worse than when I wrote to him, obviously it was all talk and no substance.

Those guys over there are emotionally fragile. I was banned from that forum, and I didn't even have a post saying anything negative about Leica. I just made a joke that I don't think they liked. I can understand my post deleted, and a warning sent for a joke, but banning seemed like a huge overreaction. Oh well.

Have to say these repair times are pretty unbelievable. So disappointing to hear this—I currently have a Q3 and was thinking about adding an SL3.

At least as CA resident—if the item in question takes more than 30 days to repair, you are protect by the state lemon law (it’s not just for vehicles like some people think it is). The law requires the manufacturer to either replace or refund the total amount of the purchase price plus taxes (if paid).

California Lemon Law for a manufacturer of an electronic product is worth more than $100.00 must include parts that can be repaired for at least seven years after the electronic was manufactured. In addition, the manufacturer must have spare parts available even if the seven-year period goes past the manufacturer’s warranty.

Make no mistake about it, the CA consumer protection board and State AG sues manufactures all the time and they win. They would have no problem going after Leica if consumers filed a complaint and Leica refused to comply.

Or worse: they are so dep into the luxury brand agenda that they focus mainly on collectors who rarely if ever use the Leica gear which they bought. I suspect that the majority of new M6 cameras are never used which shrinks the number of consumers who actually observe the scratchgate.

Yup I mentioned this earlier. People need to start using the protections they are legally afforded. That will make Leica change their tune.

One man's film scratches are another man's camera character. Just kidding. I couldn't resist.

It's probably worth picking up a ZF and M > Z adapter to tide folks over while their German crapware is on a paid vacation.

The irony is I recently read a thread where people were claiming that scratches are normal and what makes film photography film photography...

I think the correct spelling is 'krapware'.

Hi Huss,
I think your "scratchgate" thread is there on the Leica Users' Forum. I hadn't been there in years, but upon reading of your saga here on FM, I took a look and found it below:

I won't ever buy another new Leica digital. I bought a Q, had to send it in for some work a few weeks later.

They promised a 3 week turn.

It took 8 months, and would have been MUCH longer if my dealer (Popflash) wasn't on them constantly.

Leica is a premium brand, they should offer premium service. As it is, they are a premium brand with at best very poor service.

It was merged with other similar threads but not deleted.

I've seen lots of negative comments about Leica over there. They don't delete something just because it's negative. What they seem to delete, warn, and/or ban for is incessant bashing that says nothing really new every time. That's not about protecting Leica, it's just annoying AF because no one wants to hear the same sob story over and over and over, true or not.

What they did was remove lots of my comments/counter points, but kept ones ridiculing me saying I had no idea what I was doing, I was making things up, overblowing it - even after Leica acknowledged it etc.

There apparently is only one tech at Leica NJ.
