Do you actually use your cameras??

It depends. If it is just about recording the events of the day, or a holiday with friends and family, the phone is perfect. If I’m a bit more serious and think a worthy composition is realistic and I have the time, I’ll take a small fixed lens camera. The FF camera with multiple lenses comes out when photographing is the primary goal. I have too many lenses at the moment, because the system is still relatively new to me and it takes awhile to work out what lens combination works best. Eventually they will get paired down, a new body added and the current one used more as a backup.

i shoot zooms on all the "cameras" i own/use. they are also in roughly the same focal range that i normally use. i try to never sell myself short on the view just on the camera physical size.

I know what you are trying to say, but the limited focal lengths of a phone really hampers the usefulness of pre-visualizing a composition. I can’t see how you would use a phone to simulate a 18mm focal length.

It sure depends on the capabilities of your phone. I have an iPhone 13 mini. It can go from 14mm to 130mm focal length (35mm).

That’s the model I want next, just bought a pair of iPhone 14’s for son and partner but it’s too big for my liking, I currently use the SEii love its small form factor. If I’m honest I have zero complaints hence why I still use it, but when I upgrade the 13 mini will be my choice.

Also, to note
I’ve completely fell out with zooms lately
Just big cumbersome and heavy…extremely so if fast zooms otherwise slow but still big and cumbersome
I also find I always shoot at either extreme but never in the middle… like I say I have completely fell out with them, which is a bit of a headache considering how many of the blasted things I own 😂
Edit: the only exception is my football rig 5diii & 100-400Lii that’s just perfect. But for days out…. ugh no way

24-120?? Is that Nikon? Didn’t know canon did that focal range. Do you not find it burdensome? I have tried, really tried but I find them just a dead weight. I now tend to opt for the smallest lightest I can. I’m currently using a RP with the RF28/2.8 pancake the camera is almost permanently in 1:6 crop mode giving me the equivalent of 45mm. Even that with the silly hood is beginning to annoy me so I started looking for a screw in 55mm lens cap. I’m now tempted ( actually I’ll will) to buy and using a cone step drill bore a hole in the centre and leave it permanently fastened and exposed, I might bore the hole big enough to fit a tiny lens cap for extremely dusty situations. Reason is the current lens hood and cap probably adds 12-15mm to the depth of the camera lens combo and it’s bulk is extremely annoying.

well since this has been cross posted that's irrelevant. in my days with Canon (2003-2008) it was the 24-105/4

so going forward with nikon started out with 24-70/2.8 for a short while then its been 24-120/4 from there on. it is my most used optic. yes, it is from Nikon. used it on the F mount and use it on the Z mount. even the 16-80/4 (the 24-120 equiv) for my D500 DX

my days with Canon were to say the least less than reliable in the bodies. the optics were good. since 2008 i found the balance that worked for me. i was handed a Nikon D3 w/buffer UG with a 24-70/2.8 to start. that made things easy going forward. Nikon did not have a 24-105/4 at the time. later came the 24-120/4G

being that my hardware is mostly work based i have this thing for a high level of consistency.

I’m still using an iphone 8 as my digital camera. What am I missing out on?

You simply aren’t - I envy you
I find myself most relaxed with my iPhone (SEII) nothing to prove, whereas with “real” cameras I find I have to deliver otherwise what is the point of carrying this burdensome lump? Truth be told photography stresses me out these days more than it ever has. Maybe it’s the value, the constant worry of theft, the weight, the bulk, having to deliver better than the guy with the phone!! etc etc etc
But in truth I envy the phone guy. Virtually all my most treasured pictures were captured either by phone or the simple compacts we used before cellphones arrived.

Fact is I adore the iPhone silvertone picture style, my god it is stunningly beautiful.

Depends very much.

Am I by myself or with other adults or am I with my family trying to wrangle my kids and frankly, pay more attention to them than my surroundings? If I'm by myself I generally won't let cost or weight get in the way but when I'm with others and "being" with them is the purpose of the trip, my phone is fantastic. So is the GRiii which conveniently stays pretty dang inconspicuous.

I really enjoy using my cameras. When I have leisure time I am generally carrying one. In the past month I have used three different setups for very different purposes and made some shots I am very happy about.

1. dslr for kid sport, sharing photos with parents; “I could never get this with my phone” is something I’ve heard more than a few times, which brought me some joy and gave them something which I hope will bring them joy.
2. small m43 mirrorless in a dry bag taking photos of a wild and scenic river trip. I have a set now of images of dead trees from a burn which could be the core of a project if I choose to pursue it… or not, but I loved the challenge of making them especially from a moving drift boat.
3. Fuji GFX shots from a family trip to Alaska, a couple of which are probably portfolio worthy, and a bunch of humpback whale pics which have told me everything I will ever need to know about the advancement in focus systems in dslrs. I love my adapted lenses for image quality but I’m under no illusion about which system I need to grab when focusing on something moving faster than a mountain.

So yes, I use a dedicated non-phone camera with joy, intermittent success, and usually a sense of purpose.
