I really enjoy using my cameras. When I have leisure time I am generally carrying one. In the past month I have used three different setups for very different purposes and made some shots I am very happy about.
1. dslr for kid sport, sharing photos with parents; “I could never get this with my phone” is something I’ve heard more than a few times, which brought me some joy and gave them something which I hope will bring them joy.
2. small m43 mirrorless in a dry bag taking photos of a wild and scenic river trip. I have a set now of images of dead trees from a burn which could be the core of a project if I choose to pursue it… or not, but I loved the challenge of making them especially from a moving drift boat.
3. Fuji GFX shots from a family trip to Alaska, a couple of which are probably portfolio worthy, and a bunch of humpback whale pics which have told me everything I will ever need to know about the advancement in focus systems in dslrs. I love my adapted lenses for image quality but I’m under no illusion about which system I need to grab when focusing on something moving faster than a mountain.
So yes, I use a dedicated non-phone camera with joy, intermittent success, and usually a sense of purpose.
