besides modding my Domke J2 i blanked out its logos with permanent black magic marker. doesn't eliminate it but lowers it profile a whole lot

I bought a Domke F4 AF pro anazing bag but hated the Domke logo, rather than unpick I bought a Black & White iron on patch of the USA flag. It looks brilliant and way better than the Domke logo. I’m from the UK, but as Domke is USA I figured their flag would be more authentic..

There's a certain character on this forum that was posting effusive praise for the GFX 100ii and participating in many gear threads chiming in about it.

When this person went to sell it, it was revealed the camera had never been outside the poster's house, even into their yard.

A $7500 camera, subjected to a sad life indoors.

You just have to shake your head sometimes.

If I spent £7.5K on a camera I think I’d do exactly the same. Rich people can simply write it off, otherwise it’s a huge liability to us normal folk. Sometimes you buy something simply because you want to own it….not necessarily for bragging rights.

You should never buy a luxury item you cannot comfortably insure against total loss. That makes life a LOT more fun.

Just returned from a week at Banff.......crowds were elbow-to-elbow, but I only saw maybe 5 people with dedicated cameras......almost everyone using their cellphones.

Went with my wife, sister, b-i-l.....emphasis on photography but also just to visit......returning in late September (just 54 days til trip!) for heavy photography sessions......will be hitting Louise/Moraine/Emerald much earlier in the morning to avoid crowds, and if we had done that on this latest trip, we probably would have seen more dedicated camera use

You now make me think whether I’ve ever done that. I think that’s only true in my case for old classic cameras, like old folders, etc. But they are much, much cheaper than the stuff I buy to use.

Sorry but I disagree, some get pleasure from just owning it.
I have a pair of Leica binoculars in bright blue, I’ve used them maybe 2-3 times, otherwise I just grab my cheap pair of Helios, I bought them on impulse at the same time I bought the m6, also have a Rolleiflex 2.8F TLR (one owner from new) I used it briefly when I first got it, it’s never been used since. Likewise I bought numerous pairs of leatherman secateurs they now are worth 10x the price I paid so are stored away.
I take pleasure owning them rather than using them, because I can.

I’m guilty of never really selling any of my treasured photography gear even when it has been supplanted by more advanced equipment, so still have my Nikon FE2 and it’s replacement F3/T and then _it’s_ replacement Df. If I shoot film, I use my Plaubel Makina 670. I use the Df the most since I need AF now due to aging eyes, but the Plaubel still gets some good usage. Not sure my two 35mm film bodies will ever see light again but can’t really imagine selling them (especially with prices for used equipment these days!)

So to answer the question: Yes and no!

I don't think I've ever seen anyone say that they would intentionally not use a camera they own because it's expensive.
This really has nothing to do with photography, but it's a gear forum after all.

Yeh…that’s a bit strange. Unless one buys it for an investment purpose, why would anyone spend a bunch of money on something they won’t use?

Thinking back to my response to this thread, after much consideration, I'm probably going to sell off most of my film equipment and digital cameras I no longer use. Recently I have found that either film is no longer being made to the same high standards it used to be, or most online labs have forgottent how to develop film.

I'm going to keep 5 film cameras because the hold sentimental value (my 1st Nikon; FM2N, my F3HP because it was the first camera I used to photograph my kids when they were born & growing up, my Nikon F with standard prism just because, my Nikon S2 rangefinder because one of my kids wants it, and one of my Mamiya 645's).

I'm going to sell my Nikon F Photomic, Nikon F2A with motordrive, spare F3hp I rarely used, F5, F100, Mamiya 645, Mamiya RB67, and several miscellaneous cameras I have (Pentax ME Super Program, a couple of D200's, a couple of older Panasonic m4/3 bodies, etc.).

At this time in my life, those cameras are taking up valuable real-estate space in my home, and I don't see film getting any better/affordable anytime soon.

Buy what you want, use what you want, sell what you want, do whatever you want with your gear. Rocket science.

Whenever I go out shooting or if there’s even the slightest chance that I will want to do so I’ll bring my “real” camera. I almost always have my phone on me as well and will sometimes use it to scout for compositions but I don’t do photography with it. The simple reason why is because I really don’t like shooting with my phone. It’s just not enjoyable for me and I prefer to have fun even if that means I need to carry something bigger around.

i replaced the bag bottom somewhat rigid panel on the J2 with a way more rigid lighter honeycomb composite made from a damaged floor panel from the passenger compartment off of a B777. That part is only 3/8” thick.

If I’m gonna spend big bucks on a camera that will take 12 months to fix if I have a warranty claim, I’m going to make d@mn sure people know what it is.
Covering up logos is for quitters.

Generally I only take my "real" camera on special occasions. It is a burden otherwise. I'm skeptical of my phone camera's capabilities, but it does a bang up job for snapshots, food, panos, etc.. I also use it for previs.

If I want to search for an ideal frame for a landscape shot, I will try many compositions with my phone. I'll scroll through to see which I like the best, then use a metadata inspector to get the 35mm equivalent lens focal length. That tells me what lens to use on my camera.

This has been very quick and effective for me. In fact, sometimes I'm actually happier with the composition I get on my phone than I get with my camera.

I know what you are trying to say, but the limited focal lengths of a phone really hampers the usefulness of pre-visualizing a composition. I can’t see how you would use a phone to simulate a 18mm focal length.
