Yes, I know of the artist, if only because I've read up on that location with it being one of my favourite places on the island. On my summer trips I always spend a couple of nights there, partly for puffins and partly for the scenery. It also gives me a chance to catch up with a couple of Icelanders I've got to know who run the hall there that stages events. There is also a mountain running event staged there in July which is interesting to see.
My favourite church photograph, of the ones I've photographed, is Tjarnakirkja, on the north of the same peninsula as Hvitserkur (drop me a message if you want a link for the image as I don't want to post it in your thread).

Andy - thank you for adding this comment.
The altarpiece painting at Bakkagerði church you mention was done by one of Iceland's most beloved artists, Jóhannes Kjarval.
As you must have no doubt noticed, almost all the churches in Iceland are rather simple structures, but they often blend beautifully with the natural surroundings. There are no grand architectural masterpieces in Iceland (except for the 20th C Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík) like in many European capitals. Iceland was extremely poor for most of its history. That and the harsh weather meant most of the time and energy was spent surviving.
