p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Something needs to go..

I know this is a high class problem so please be gentle.

Over the last 30 years, I've bought and sold and bought and sold (cameras and lenses) including a few items from folks right here recently. Here is where I find myself.

Right now I own an SL2s, an SL3, an M11P, a Q3 and Canon R5 + RF lens kit.

My wife is right. We are the stage in life where SOMETHING needs to go. It's probably NOT the M. I shoot street, bars, restaurants and cafes and some portrait. We travel and I love travel photography. I also shoot birds on the east coast of North and South Carolina. I make a few bucks shooting people's pets (who knew??). Birds and Pets are handled with the R5.

I ask the smart people here, what goes? I'm thinking it's the SL cameras but that SL3 is beautiful and the low light capability I get from SL2s is beyond impressive. I also think Leica will continue to improve the autofocus and other items on the SL3 through firmware. BUT, for now the SL is not getting the Job done for moving animals and wildlife.

What am I not thinking about? Again, I know this is a high class problem but I'd appreciate the input.

You are thinking things through logically-

Sell the SL gear and go take a trip with your wife with the funds- My guess is you won't miss it.

I have a similar kit to yours-

M11-P- M11-M Q3
Nikon Z8/Z6iii

I have wanted an SL3 but it just doesn't make sense. It won't provide me anything my Nikon gear can't do- Your Canon Gear is the same. You need it- You don't need the SL3/2.

End of story-

Before rushing to sell anything, set both the SL’s and Q3 aside for a month, then use the M camera/Canon combination. If that checks all the boxes for you. If it does, then you’ll know what to sell

Okay! I was hoping there might be someone out there to confirm my thinking. Thank you.

My M11 stays period. It is the camera that inspires me to shoot.

I have the Sony A1 for times when speed and AF are required.

I now have a D-Lux 8 for times I just want convenience, no hassle, recording of good times with friends and family. It is a mini Q3 with a zoom

I think you could sell off the SL cameras, for sure. The Q is a wonderful camera but probably offers nothing you can't get with the others.

I know what you mean on the SL2-S low light / high iso. It's mind-blowing. I hated to see mine go.

Yeah, don't sell the M. M+R5 seems right. Just sell the SLs and Q3 then...buy the Hasselblad X2D lol

I would keep the M11-P and the SL3. You can use the M-lenses with adapter on the EVF-based SL3, too. This itself is an advantage over the other ones. SL2s could become a backup but also might be redundant with the SL3 in place. I only see in your case the Q3 needed for travel photography with a more compact fixed lens camera. If you don't travel a significant amount per year, I would sell it. The whole Canon camera and lens kit is redundant and can be gone IMO.

To me the Q3 is the obvious first cut. The M11-P and any of the Voigtlander 28's would likely scratch that itch (the 28mm f1.5 is sublime). Then I'd look at the SL2-s/SL3. If you're shooting APO primes on that I'd be hard pressed to ditch them but I'm not sure I'd need/want both particularly if you've got the Canon in place for AF needs.

I was hoping that would be the case. For me, the SL3 is no R5 replacement for birds and moving animals. ymmv. And, that RF 400mm is something else. Although, that would make for a nice item to sell.

I've got the APO 35 and 75 and they are very nice. If I'm being honest, the 24-90 provides a more natural look to my now approaching 60 year old eyes. The RF 50 and 85 1.2's are pretty nice even if they are HEAVY. The CV 28mm Nokton is on the M11P right now (GREAT call).

I think I'm getting closer to the answer.

I personally would let go of the Q3 first (unless you truly use it a lot), then probably one of the SLs.

The M, the Canon R5 and one of the SLs should give you all you need I believe.

Yes, I can see the use of the R5 for AF performance and long lenses. It's an area which I don't oven tackle in photography. I am using my old Canon 5D MkII if I need AF. Mostly my older Canon gear sits in my bag. Comes down now how much you need the SL and Q gear.

OK a serious response.

Sell the R5 and get an R5II. Sell any lens that doesn't need that AF system or give you goosebumps when you see the files. Sell any lens you look at and wonder if it's *worth* schlepping it around.

Sell the Q3. Sell the SL2-S. The SL3 basically has the same usable DR anyway and you can just use DXO to remove any advantage of the SL2S. Buy a SL/M adaptor. Consider a Sigma 50 1.2, 24-70II and 70-200 with your APO's and M lenses. Add any lens that you sold in Canon that you'll enjoy more on the SL3. And if you do want something huge I prefer the SL Summilux 50 over the RF 1.2L. Consider a couple of Sigma DGDN primes for a portable kit.

Keep the M11.

Gordon.

p.s. I have every camera you listed, except the SL2-S and I'm not selling any of them, except to get a R5II and sell the R5's. Plus, I have more than that. I you actually enjoy all of them then keep all of them. Logic be damned.

Contrarian view, given the opinions on Q3:

I would keep the Q3, there is nothing like it. And keep the R5. Sell the M11P unless you are keen on the "rangefinder" experience, but don't sell M lenses. Sell the SL2S and SL3, but keep the SL APO primes. Then reevaluate after one year.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation, except it's not my wife telling me to get rid of stuff. I just got too much before I moved from the US to Europe and will now take the time to see what I use and want to keep and what is not worth keeping.

Like you, I have the R5 for AF and excellent lenses for portrait work.

I also have a Q2M and the M11 and too many M-mount lenses. I'm going to take my time figuring out what I like and what I don't really care for.

On top of that, I have a full MFT kit for travel and longer shots than the Leica can manage. And I have a bunch of cameras I just like (Fuji X100V etc.).

In other words, I have redundancy that I don't need. If you feel that's true in your case as well, your decision is pretty straightforward, as others have pointed out. The problem starts where the fine line begins between what you rationally don't need but what you emotionally very much like. I can't help you with that. In my case, I'm pretty sure that rationally, I only need part of my MFT kit to produce the images that I 'need.' (Don't tell MY wife...)
