I normally travel with my laltop and 2 ssd’s. I’m trying to see if I can get by with just an iPad. How would you suggest backing up my photo files. Using Sony rx100 so only one card in camera.

This has nothing to do with Europe, but in any case, backing up is the reason I take my laptop and two external SSD drives. I wish I trusted any other method as much.

My brother-in-law does this (ipad and copies/backs up to several SSDs). I prefer to take my laptop wherever I go.

I think he might mean that since he'll be travelling, he won't have access to the storage options at his house (his NAS, maybe?) and might not have sufficient bandwidth to backup to the cloud.

Personally, I try to bring enough memory cards that I can shoot the entire trip without having to delete/reformat my cards until I get back home. I also backup any of the day's images to my laptop's internal drive, and an external drive. Bandwidth at the hotel or wherever I am saying being sufficient, I'll also move images to my NAS at home over VPN.

Yeah, I get that. It’s just a much wider travel issue.

Yep, depending on where one travels, backup strategies differ. Traveling in Tanzania, I was without power for days at a time.

It is light travel. Want everthing to fit in carryon bag. Trying to eliminate computer satchel. Photography is not the main purpose of the trip. Else where I've carried laptop and external drives making copies on laptops 2T 2nd drive and another on each of the 2 external SSD. Works great but need lighter for this trip. Using laptop, I can go without power for several days.

i think there needs to be a little more detail to flesh out the real world requirements. i do quite a bit of air travel. its the who, what, where, when scenario.

i have a 13.5" HP laptop which really isn't much larger than a ipad pro which i also carry for amusement purposes and review .

are you carrying a daypack too?

not too good for the phone battery. hope you don't need to use it for other purposes. then of course you need to have a fair bit of onboard memory in your phone too and time.

i've done this with my ipad. not quite as quick as you think, and it is relative power consumptive.

Are you using a high speed cable? My Ipad pro 2020 can take 45 min to write 128gb on a ssd if i use a stock apple cable, it goes down to a few mins with the right cable.

You need to make sure your entire chain (phone/tablet, cable, reader and ssd) supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 transfer speeds of up to 10Gb/s.
