I currently own a Nikon Z50,Z6ii,and a D7200 and my biggest lens is a Nikon 200-500. I use the combo with an older Gitzo GN5541 monopod, and a RRS QR plate. I would like to get a ball head so as to allow me to do some tilting and panning while shooting birds and surfers.

There are a bunch of ball heads on the market, and I would be interested in getting some recommendations. I have no objections to buying used. I want to keep my cost to no more than $200.00

Since you mentioned using it for birds and surfers, I would suggest using something like this instead of a ball head. It will allow you to more efficiently and safely use your 200-500 with a monopod. It's what I use on my monopod for wildlife.

A ball head is not the best solution with a monopod. I'd suggest a "monogimbal" style head like the Wimberley MH-100 or Leofoto MPG-01. These can be balanced so your camera setup doesn't "flop" accidentally. Yes, you can use a ball head with a side slot to get similar balance. But most ball heads don't move very freely in that 90 degree position.

I recommend the RRS MH-01 monopod head.

I recently purchased a monopod to use with a heavier lens, 500mm f4. I decided on the Wimberley MH-100 and highly recommend it or a similar monogimbal. One thing that I was warned about is it offsets the weight to the side and not directly over the monopod. You get used to it very quickly but is noticeable. Great set up for hiking, birds, and wildlife. Lots of freedom of movement.

Thanks to everyone for your recommendations. I have found a Wimberley MH=100 in used condition.

I would not use a ball head on a monopod but rather a tilt shift head that is much easier to control and costs a great deal less than a ball head as well as being lighter. I use the Sirui L-10 monopod tilt head that sells for $99.90 at BH Photo.
