do we know if these cameras are using pci 4 or 3, big impact on buffering and write speeds?

I can't remember where I saw it, but I'm pretty confident I saw PCIE 4 referenced for inclusion on at least the R1. If you don't need those types of speeds the (PCIE 3?) models are pretty significantly price dropped on BH now, I think I saw some cards @ 70% off?

EDIT: Reading through replies to this, my PCIE knowledge on the cameras is off, listen to people later on in this thread.

However, there is definitely very good sales on some of the slower memory cards, if speed isn't too much of a concern you can get some good prices.

Canon UK: (R1)

Storage Type
2x CFexpress type B maximum capacity 2TB (compatible with CFexpress 2.0 and VPG400)

R5II is the same except only 1 CFe card.
If either had CFexpress 4.0, they'd be the first and it would have been a headline.
To make use of faster cards and neccessary interface, the bodies would actually have to be capable which I'm pretty sure they are not.

The both seem to have PCIe 3.0, but that isn't saying much. The original R5 also have PCIe 3.0, but topped out at 500MByte/s instead of the approx. 1700MByte/s practical maximum. So even with keeping PCIe 3.0 the R5II can in theory become more than 3 times faster than its predecessor.

if pice 4 was late for canon development and they decided not to include it later, nikon and sony(??) will have a leg up. i also think it will make it cheaper to build new cameras since u dont need a large buffer.

Nikon and Sony’s competing models are older and will be updated during the R52 and R1’s tenure. The total package of those updates will determine any advantage over Canon. I don’t perceive inclusion of CFx 4 support alone to be a “killer” because those updated bodies are unlikely to take advantage of the full speed of the standard or fastest cards. In fact Canon might be at an advantage since CFx 4 cards probably won’t be affordable until compatible cameras are readily available.

But realistically most shooters stick with their brand because they are invested with lenses and it’s a pain to switch. All we can do is lust and hope competitors new features come to our brand.

True, they won't be able to use the full speed, but throttled down, they are still likely to be able to move substantially more data.

I suspect Nikon will be the first to make use of it, being they are already all-in on high data rates and low buffer storage.
