R5II Weather Sealing?

Has anyone seen a review that talks about the weather sealing of the R52? I know some of the specs indicate that it has weather sealing, but I'm a little concerned about the new vents. I'm wondering if the weather sealing still holds when the camera is upside down. For example I often carry it with a strap on the bottom plate.

From canon

“ Whatever the weather

The EOS R5 Mark II is built to the exacting standards that serious image makers have come to love. Moisture and dust-resistant seals protect the camera in harsh environments. A magnesium alloy chassis is tough enough for professional use.

I would be surprise if it’s not as good as r5. It is possible to build cooling in a closed system but heat transfer happens best with metal and plastic /rubber does not transfer energy as efficiently. So either they have inefficient heat transfer (plastic/rubber) or rust corrosion (fluid near fluid or metal) . Likely they will do a good job that will last for years or they would have warranty claims / class action law suites. So likely good enough.

My worry is about cold weather performance. Does it brick at -35 because of the new features. Eg they solve too hot and create too cold.

Thanks! That makes sense.

On the cold weather. The canon UK site lists the operating temp at 1-40C (33.8-104 F)
https://www.canon.co.uk/cameras/eos-r5-mark-ii/specifications/

The small range concerned me at first, but then I realized that the R5 is listed as the same
https://www.canon.co.uk/cameras/eos-r5/specifications/

The R3 is only slightly better at 0-40C and the R1 expands the top end at 0-45
https://www.canon.co.uk/cameras/eos-r1/specifications/

I was really surprised by the specs, but I've used my R3 and R5 at around -20F and 113F I did get some heat warning with video in the 113. It is surprising that the rated range is so narrow, but I haven't had issues expanding that range in the past.

I regularly use r5 down at -38 with wind - and it keeps on going. And it says 1C lowest. But long ago I bought the Sony a7r and it would brick regularly at these kind of temperatures. Not good at all for aurora. Likely it will work fine but I won't know unless I buy it and try it.

I’m concerned about the vents too, but for a different reason. I don’t see how you can clean inside them.

It’s not just the actual grot, but proving that there is no grot present. Australia’s famously strict quarantine service would be quite capable of taking the camera away on entry to the country if you declared that you’d taken it somewhere like a rainforest or farm. I’ve personally had hiking boots and a drum taken away for cleaning, both damaged. Recently, a large shipment of cars was stuck in quarantine for 3 months while being treated for insects. They are not even being pettifogging about it – insects riding along can cause huge damage to agriculture and the environment. The varroa mite, which afflicts European honeybees, has only recently arrived and has established itself in NSW. You can’t bring a hive into Victoria.

^ Just tell them you stayed in your hotel the whole time. I wonder if anyone actually declares they visited a farm on those customs forms? (not to suggest that invasive organisms are a trivial topic)

Time will tell about the vents. I can't help but think of Lens Rentals's reports back some years ago about damaging water ingress of Sony mirrorless cameras through the base plate area... right about where that vent is.

Canon's official operating temperature range is always the same and IMO to cover their butts. It's an easy out to explain operational failure, should it happen. But like Scott, I've used Canon and other brand cameras well below freezing. If anything, digital cameras are like mini ovens with the sensor and data transfer to the card generating a fair amount of heat. It's the battery that is the likely point of failure in extreme cold.

For the above reasons, I don't think so. I also had that experience with the original a7R becoming inoperable in moderately sub-zero (˚C) conditions while my Leica M240 kept ticking...
