Hey R3 users. I have an R6 and an R3, and I shoot sports and dance. I like how I have my back-button focus set up on my R6... left AF is for normal AF (whatever my AF is set to, usually point or expanded point), middle is for eye detect, and far right is my "oh sh!t" button that invokes horizontal zone AF. The later uses a button assignment called 'Register/recall shooting function" and lets me choose "horizontal zone AF".

Fast-forward to the R3, and I have the left two buttons set up identical (to my R6), but I can*not* figure out how to get the far right button to invoke "full zone AF" (or any other zone AF). I can figure out how to switch the AF to zone, but then I have to press another button to actually get the thing to focus. I want one button to mash that focusing on something close-ish to camera.

Anybody figure out how to do this on their R3?? thank you!!!

On the R3, subject tracking is available for all AF area modes. So, you can turn this on and off independently of the AF point / area. (Eye tracking is also a separate toggle.) This can be enabled or disabled independently for each BBF assignment.

When you set up the Custom Function button assignments, you can customize the behavior by pressing INFO. This takes you to a sub-menu that lets you configure additional settings to be recalled when the button is pressed.

Have you looked through the options available there?

When I'm in the menu to assign a new function to that button (far-right thumb), pressing INFO seems to have no effect. How do I find this secret sub-menu? Maybe it will give me the key here! Thank you for your help.

I am pretty sure you have to choose 'Metering and AF Start' as the function you assign for this menu to be available. The INFO sub-menu is available there. You can set your AF Area, Tracking and other things as you like.

OK, now I feel really stupid. I found the 'Register/recall shooting function' among the customize buttons options... it got put among "playback" options... so, weird, but I should have seen it earlier.

So my R5/R6 configuration of AF buttons works now on my R3. That "register/recall shooting function" is incredibly flexible!! Sorry Canon to doubt you!

Glad you got it sorted.

I wish Canon would prioritize menu consistency among its models a bit more.

On my R6 Mark II, the 'Subject Tracking' option on the R3 has been replaced by 'Whole area tracking Servo AF'. But here's the kicker--it's not actually the same function. Subject tracking on the R6 Mark II is always enabled--unless you set 'Subject to Detect' to 'None'. 'Whole area tracking Servo AF', on the other hand, controls whether subject tracking operates across the whole screen, or only within the selected AF Area when it is active.

I get that as feature sets evolve, they have to change things up, but I like the R3 setup.

These modern systems do have a learning curve. After coming from 5D Mark IVs and 1DX Mark IIs, it probably took me a year to feel in command of how the camera's AF system works. (And even now I probably miss some things.)
