I have an R3 for wildlife, and am still using my 13 year old 1Ds Mk III for most other things, because I often need the cross points, prefer the optical finder, and don’t usually need high ISO. I was open to replacing the DSLR with an R5 successor to get better high ISO performamce, and the higher resolution might sometimes be nice to have, but is by no means important. At some point one of my EF lenses will need replacement – mine are between 17 and 9 years old – and I’m unlikely to sink money into EF mount lenses, assuming they would even be obtainable new.
But I had assumed we’d get cross points. There’s no way I’m paying that kind of money in 2024 for a newly-released R5 Mk II without cross points when Canon have demostrated in the R1 they can do cross points.
As a second body, a second R3 actually makes more sense for me; if I didn’t dislike the RF lens selection on offer so much I’d probably do it. I’ve said it before: Canon’s RF system is clearly designed for professional wedding and sports photographers. That isn’t me.
