If buying or not....

This is a powerful camera but with a steap price (5500 USD 25% tax included for me) and therefore I'm hesitating a bit that said...

I really like the ergonomic of Canon cameras I feel like "I'm home" when using them ...

* I'm sure the 1/160s readoutspeed is enough for ME.
* The AF options are good.
* DR and IQ: I'll have to wait until I can open the raw files in 3:rd party apps and playing with them to see if it meet my needs.

* The only drawback I've seen yet is the video options, The options are not clear yet. I have to wait and play with samples.

* FF 8k60p RAW I'm fine with that option.

* FF 4k60p SRAW, hmm I wonder how they end up with it.... is it lineskipping in this SRAW format?

* APS-C 4k60p oversampled does it exist? it does on the R5 and I used it very much for wildlife videos when reach was an issue allthough the AF was too slow in video for wildlife.

* No oversampling in anything FF over 30p.... BIG issue!

Waiting for hands on reviews from people I trust. There may be a nikon or sony in my future as I'm not waiting for the r5 mark III or for all these lenses I don't need (f2 etc). Need something like 150-600 or 200-600 for wildlife. 600 with drop in 1.4x. Other things for wildlife/nature photographers.

I dropped Canon some years ago for Olympus for bird photography and mostly kept the R5 and R6II as a platform for model photography and great lenses like the RF 50/1.2 and RF 135/1.8. There’s nothing in the R5II that will improve my results, so I’m passing on it.

Initially it was a pass for me. 45mpx vs 45mpx ( I want 85mpx, light, and no aa - I miss my 5dsr for landscape) and seemingly no improvement in burst or pre capture and possibly a step back in dynamic range. And $4300 plus $500 in new batteries (to replace existing) and $200 in bigger cfexpress (15fps 160 frames with 2s buffer clear with precapture vs 20fps 80 with 4s buffer clear - guesses). But that was before details emerged.

But now that I understand that i) e shutter is 14 bit, ii) the e shutter is very adjustable in speed, iii) the pre capture is way improved (no 1 container and auto flagging of not sharp pictures), and iv) its likely okay for buffer if I dial it back to 15 fps in electronic to get a very long 300 burst and 1st recovery (guess) --- it is just now waiting to make sure the dynamic range has not gone backward with stacked sensor because I am 2/3 landscape and 1/3 big animals. I am not in a hurry because bear season ends in September and I would not likely get it until then - so I might as well wait for March. And I want to see tests on dynamic range. The $500 for batteries still bugs me given that adjustable fps was likely doable in hardware update on R5.

The biggest hurdle for me is that the R5 is very good. ISO 25k is usable. 20fps is way adequate. 4k video is great. The only lacking I had was precapture and variable e shutter and 14 bit e shutter. But are these features worth $4800? Realistically a bigger cfexpress card and an r7 for pixels per feather, are a better use of my money.

Undecided, I have an r6 and I've been mulling over upgrading to the r5 or mark II. I don't technically need 45mp since I pretty much only shoot sports. I'm not disappointed with it, but not blown away either.

I have tested them on an R5 and thought the focus assist indicator (and especially the in viewfinder magnification) were excellent so I definitely see the future and am excited about it. I enjoy focusing manual when I'm working with slow things, and especially enjoy a (non focus by wire) true well dampened focus as so well implemented in the Zeiss classics and Milvus lenses. My limited run with focus by wire (m43 and GFX zooms) has been less satisfying.

Plan:
1) pay off existing debt
2) begin saving $
3) purchase the R camera best suited by the time 1 and 2 are completed.

Buying two bodies, will sell either my r3 or r52, whichever i can get the most money for used. R5 II is pretty much all i need a camera.

I have ordered mine, I have the R5 &R3, this new one seems like the best of both worlds. I love the R3 for wildlife, I just don't like the 24 MP, but seems to perform better in low light I like the smaller form factor of the R5 and the 45 MP. I think with the new 45 mp BSI sensor, R3 EVF adjustable frame rate in ES (hopefully the artificial shutter noice) new and improved AF similar to the R3 (R5 is good but the R3 is better) and hopefully the R3 low light AF it seems like the best of both worlds. I guess the thing I will miss with the R3 is the bigger battery that drives a faster AF with the RF 400 f2.8 and RF 600 f4 faster (maybe with the improved new battery it will work similar to the R3 though doubtful

I've decided to buy one... but I have bad taste in my mouth on this one. The money isn't the big deal, but they are charging a PREMIUM for the stacked sensor that is largely a second rate stacked sensor (as far as speed). Also, Canon USA had miss-info/mixed up specs on their website at launch that gave me a little bit of a bait and switch feel. But after viewing Canon Japan for the good info, the true picture comes into view. Still looks like a great camera but definitely less appealing.

On the sensor, Canon Japan confirmed the sensor is 40% faster than the R5 (16ms)... meaning it's just under 10ms. That's not nothing, but its significantly behind the best out there, and behind some that have been out there for a decade. If they were selling it at less than the premium cost, this could be forgiven, but at a full price premium, it just leaves a bad taste.

On the battery, you effectively lose quite a few capabilities if you are not using the new "P" battery. Things like Pre-shooting are disabled when not using a "P" battery.

Canon USA showed the AF ability for low light as significantly improved (-7.5EV), but Canon Japan shows it as closer to the R5 at -6.5EV (improved from -6EV). Not a big deal, but annoying to have so many inaccuracies on the Canon page. It also had the wrong EVF info, shutter info, and importantly AF info. Many of the inaccuracies were effectively the R1's specs.

But if I'm honest... the biggest issue I have is the sensor. I almost feel like it's being misrepresented. But I guess no one said it was going to be a fast stacked sensor. Like I said, bad taste, but I'll reserve judgment until it's in my hands.

****UPDATE****

Canon appears to have had incorrect info on their site. Individual reports from reviewers are claiming a readout speed of 6.3ms, not the 9.7ms Canon was suggesting. Considering the amount of mixed up specs between the R1 and R5 Mark II, its possible this was meant for the R1, meaning the R1 was 40% faster than the R3 which seems much more inline.

I recently used the new RF 24-105/2.8Z for a couple weeks and while that was mostly with AF, it has perhaps the most pleasing fly by wire MF experience I have had to date. It felt like a super smooth mechanical lens with just the right resistance. So maybe there is hope that fly by wire can be good.

I put down "other". The R5II will almost certainly be my next camera, but will have to wait a while, maybe a refurb or a black Friday sale next year. For now the R5 is working well for my needs. One thing I will order soon is the new battery grip. The layout looks much better ergonomically for vertical use than the previous one. The new vertical grip will work on the current R5.

I have been shooting with a combination of a 1DX2 and 5DSR for years. I was hoping that the R1 would be the "one that does it all." It isn't.

But the R5II likely will be plenty good enough for my needs. I'll wait to see what the world thinks of it before buying (it's not like I'm suffering now), but I expect that the world will like the R5II, and that I will buy one in six months or so.

So folks what's the verdict here? Is Canon finally doomed or not yet?

I voted "pre-ordered".

Canadian preorders now have a bonus opportunity on preordering the R5 MKII.

Sort of a deja-vu to when the R5 was announced. While supplies last they can get Canon EOS-R jacket (Seems to be the same one I got when I preordered the original R5).

With the jacket Canon is also offering a rebate of upto $500 on the 100-500, 24-70, 70-200/2.8 and 15-35. From the looks of it each household could buy all 4 and save $2000.

https://www.canoncreatorlab.ca/offers/r5-mark-ii-pre-order-bonus/

It will be interesting to see what offers might be offered to other Canon regions.

Although I do have a RP (with a scratched sensor). My local dealer sent spam yesterday for pre-order of the R1…£6,995!! 😳

I’m sure it’s amazing but….. seven thousand pounds!!

I'm not so sure about that. I watched Vanessa Joy's video last night and she showed off a shot taken at 32000 ISO (not a typo) that was remarkably clean for that extreme level and super clean and sharp after denoise was applied.

Also disagree about the customization being incremental, but I suppose that depends on one's needs but for me here's just a couple huge new adds that I've been pining for for awhile:

- ability to change the max FPS in each continuous drive mode. (Obviously unimportant for landscape shooter, but nice to have if you shoot action/wildlife).

- Pre-shooting
...Show more

Points well taken. I've done a couple of upgrades recently (OM1 and GFX) and have learned that some may dismiss individual component upgrades as superficial (and maybe even possible with firmware updates to the original model), but when you live in the ecosystem, all the upgrades taken together form a reason to upgrade. It's the nuances that often make the difference.
