Hello all,

I am interested in switching back to an interchangeable lens system and selling off my Leica. I have a budget of ~3500-3800 post-tax for a body and 24-70 2.8 lens (ef since the rf is out of my tax bracket). I do mostly portraiture and photojournalism, alongside street and travel photography.

Would the R5 R6 or R6II be best for my needs? Size is not really an issue for me as I carry a backpack everywhere I shoot, but I am aiming for this body to last the next 4-6 years minimum, as I am still a broke college student.

Depends on if you want the resolution or not. Personally I would go with the R5. Right now a used R5 and a used RF 24-70mm 2.8 would fit within your budget and would easily last you years.

I think any of them could work. The extra pixels could be nice, 20-24mp ff probably isn't too bad, though. I can't make a logical argument 20-24mp would be obsolete in the next few years.

The R6 is probably going to be the least expensive, barring a super deal on the R6 II or something. Of course there's lots of inexpensive gear out there, especially DSLR, that could be great. Though eye af could be really great on portraits and people.

24-70/2.8 should do well for the stuff you are shooting, but if you're doing a lot of portraits something longer and or faster could be excellent

Would the R6 be ok for me then so I can put more money towards getting the RF glass instead of an R5 or would the r5 be worthwhile for me rn

So you think R6 + RF 24-70 2.8 instead of EF?

Better glass is the way to go.

I have r5 (45mpx, IBIS, $3500, 750grams) and R8 (24mpx, no IBIS, $1500, 450grams). I use r8 as my secondary camera and for backpacking. (R8 is a R6ii with $1000 less price and no IBIS).

45mpx vs 24mpx:
- 45 mpx îs better for cropping and 8k and printing larger
- if you can fill the frame 24mpx is adequate
- if you shoot off tripod (photjournalism) 45mpx is not likely to yield much more resolution because you are shaky
- For portraits on tripod, 24mpx is adequate
- For photojournalism, 45mpx is occasionally more useful if you are not able to get close or afford a longer lens. However usually you don't need to print really big for photojournalism and image quality is not as important.
- R5 is expensive and for the gap in price with 24mpx bodies I think it's not worth it. And r6ii and R8 are good enough cameras.

IBIS vs no IBIS
R6ii , R6 has IBIS. R8 does not.
IBIS is only useful in for shooting non moving subjects (eg city scapes)
For action its not useful
Its nice to have but not necessary for off tripod or action

Double cards or not
r8 has only 1 card slot - R6ii R6 have 2
I am not a professional (not paid) but I have never had a card failure and using save to 2 cards slows the camera down
I think the r8 is adequate

Video: both R8 and R6ii do great on 4k video. R8 does a great job with 4k video.

Batteries:
R6ii R6 has bigger longer lasting batteries
If you only have one camera, the r8 is fine with switching batteries. I you eventually buy another camera eg r7, r5 then you will have two systems

r6 vs R8 vs R6II
- r6 has less mpx 20vs 24 (10% less resolution)
- r8 has pre capture (useful for photojournalism but a pain to use)
- R6 has IBIS vs R8 not (not overly useful for photogrounalism and not useful for portrait)
- I would be inclined to R8 over R6 for newer, pre capture burst, and weight (but not that iBIS, C3 and dual slots might be important to you).

C1,C2, C3
R8 only has 2 presets C1, and C2, whereas r6ii R6 have 3
C1,C2 (c3) are different between video and stills
This is the most frustrating thing about r8 for me. I like C3.

For what you are doing, I would recommend the r8. Cheaper, does everything you need -- but if any of the following is really critical I would buy the R6:
IBIS ( I don't think so, because you did not indicate hand held landscape)
C3 (up to you. )
Battery life ( not a big deal. change the battery)
Extra card slot (up to you)

Since you mention 4-6yrs this is a no brainer, get the R5. The R5 is the only body mentioned in this thread that has it all. And in 4-6yrs when you start making money and you buy yourself a nice 8K monitor you'll be bummed on anything other than the R5's 45mp files. The R6II 24mp files will fall apart, so definitely future proof your files with resolution. The R5 is an amazing camera and it would be the only camera I would want to be thinking about owning several years from now in a time when screen resolution is hockey sticking upward. Like Robert said above, you can get an R5 and RF 24-70 2.8 for $3500.

If you are like many of us you will be revisiting your photos in 15-20yrs from now. The increase in resolution from 24-45 is significant. If you don't care about any of this then just find a deal on an R6 for under 1k and spend your money on glass.

Exactly. I'm bemoaning the same already today between my R3 and R5 on my 6k screen. It will only get worse.

Maybe true, but you've been nailing shots recently with your R3 that you wouldn't have gotten with your R5.

R6 prices have been all over the place, IIRC $1300 refurbished a little over a year ago then under $1200 after 10% Canon loyalty program discount. Then I looked last Christmas it was $1999 at B&H, I've heard $1k used, more like $1500-1600 if you buy keh or mpb.

You'd probably have to buy locally on CL or Marketplace to get closer to $1k, I doubt I could do that in this area, I'd be curious what people are doing to get those prices, although granted I haven't checked on here. If you are going to just use mpb or keh $1500-1600 might be better off $1999 R6 II now or you might be able to get R5 slightly over $2k, especially once R5 II comes out

That is true, too At the same time, the only thing I have ever used the R3 for is owls in dim light (I use the R5 when it's still broad daylight). So to me it falls into the category of "one trick pony" whereas the R5 is the camera (or two of them) that goes with me everywhere. The R3 never stepped outside my own and King county... I consider myself fortunate to be able to buy a camera and lens (400/2.8) for one single, highly specialized subject matter. Whether it's Africa or Antarctica, the R5 and 400/4 are in the bag.

I'm sticking with a 5K monitor and that's my final word! /humor/

There is always Topaz to fit a bigger monitor. Besides isn't 6 K just 21 MP? Albeit 16:9, 24 MP oughta cover it. Still, I've grown to like my 32 and 45 MP sensors.

I have the r5, r6 I, and r8 and the r8 is actually my most used camera unless it’s a big paid job. I like the r5 a lot, but the r8 is a fun camera with amazing autofocus (noticeably better/quicker for me than the r5). Downsides are the battery, and lack of joystick, both of which are worth considering, with the joystick being the biggest loss for me (hard to switch which eye is in focus). Personally, I’d spend the money on better glass and get the r8, and then consider selling it once the r5II comes out, if you need the extra MP.

There's no real 6K standard afaik, but the Apple 6K monitor is 6016 x 3384, so the R3 won't fill it, even uncropped. And to deny 8K is on the horizon would be fairly short sighted. I have a library of 40k images that my computer pulls random desktop pictures from every minute, and I can definitely tell what camera a photo was taken with. The resolution doesn't make a photo automatically good, but it sure helps. Modern day monitors show flaws like no print can.

Back on my original account, the R8 seems interesting, but I do wonder how it will hold up in the long term. What are its limitations compared to those of the R6/6ii/5 besides IBIS? The Pre-burst mode might be helpful, but I have never really considered it a necessary feature. However, I mainly just want the body to last and be future-proof for the next few years, and I worry that if I go for a cheaper body, that might not be the case.

As for future-proof: Canon doesn't deliver new features in FW, so what you see is what you get. You don't need to guess what you may or may not get. Makes it a bit easier.
