Couldn’t care less! I prefer to see people get the gear they want than whine about their BH backorder status though.

This discussion seems to come up with nearly every Canon release. For items that will be low supply, very high demand, or both, it appears Canon likes to spread stock around to all dealers rather than favor the largest with the bulk of early production availability. Therefore it's often better luck to deal with a smaller regional or local shop than a place like B&H.

While I am not in the US, I recall with the RF 135/1.8 last summer that it was very difficult to find and many US-based members here had no luck at the usual larger shops. Meanwhile, I walked into my LCS and they had one on the shelf (maybe the demand here was lower?).

It's not a crapshoot. You have to have a relationship with an LCS, it's that simple. Amazon, BH, Adorama are all shops for NPCs

Your LCS (or one in another city) will often have a paper list they will put you down on, sometimes before a camera is even announced. This guarantees your spot before the masses even know about the camera.

Sorry, yes, it's a crapshoot but maybe I didn't simplify my thought enough. Yes, you put your name down at your LCS. That means absolutely zero as far as what allocation that store will get or when it will receive it. So, as I was saying in my original post, I've been very high up the list at my LCS but Amazon got ample stock in well before my LCS. I've also been middle of the pack at LCS and received my item before those who ordered the day of announcement at BH. So that is what I call a crapshoot. Just because you are high up on a list doesn't mean anything if Canon doesn't ship adequate stock to that deal and there is no rhyme or reason how Canon USA ships product out to dealers.
