As the official announcement for the R5 II draws nigh (likely July 17) which would be the best retailers for pre-orders? The big retailers will likely receive the earliest and largest shipment of stock but they will also have the longest pre-order lists (and will likely have private best customer lists). Ant recommendations for second and third tier retailers that might be better bets for early purchase fulfillment?

People have mentioned stores in Dallas, Austin, Seattle, might just google and call around to see. I've ordered a lot of stuff NYC stores but idk about pre orders, like you mentioned

The big retailers, like B&H, Adorama etc. are not a favorable choice unless you're lucky enough to be at or near the top of the list.

I got my RF100-500 from Texas Media Systems when they were scarce to nonexistent elsewhere, but people quickly get clued in to those type outlets, so it's still best to vie to get high on the list.

Another strategy often employed is to place orders with multiple outlets.

If you don't have your order in already, you may be waiting a while. Most stores I deal with already have long pre-order lists for the new camera.

Unlikely. It's not an RTX x090. It's a niche device that only people on this forum seem to care about. Not even all people on this forum, but only those from the Canon group with spare $4k to spend

We don't even know exactly if that's going to be an R5 announcement. It could be related to the R1.

Since this site is at least in part supported by orders with B & H it might be a good idea to use them. Camera purchases are not emergencies. As to longer waits with the larger retailers......They leverage a lot of clout with the manufacturers. If B & H calls Canon, they take their call. Quickly.

When stores already have 30 or 40 orders in hand (last time I checked) before the camera has even been announced, I suspect you're the only one who thinks it won't be popular.

Jokes aside, no, I don’t think it won’t be popular. I think it’s just a camera, and it’s not unique or cutting edge, so why such a hype?

True: I've found the lens at 2 Canadian stores. Unfortunately they don't ship to the U.S.A. So far no luck at either U.S. or Australian stores...

For the record, Canon developed their first global CMOS sensor way back in 2016. So even if it did have a GS it wouldn't be cutting edge.

True, but also for the record, CCD sensors in video cameras had global shutter well before 2016

Nevertheless GS showed up in a usable consumer photography device just recently, and I'm pretty sure you got what I'm saying...

There is no "best". It's all a crapshoot. I've been top 10 in line for stuff before and ended up getting it on Amazon a month later when Amazon got there stock in. I've been 50 in line, ordered days after an announcement, and got it before people who ordered day of announcement elsewhere. Don't overthink it.

Just support your local shop if you have one otherwise find another city's local shop that ships. Just check Canon USA's site to make sure the store is authorized and not selling gray market products. That said I tend to have better luck with stores in middle America than on the coasts.

It's not a crapshoot. You have to have a relationship with an LCS, it's that simple. Amazon, BH, Adorama are all shops for NPCs

Your LCS (or one in another city) will often have a paper list they will put you down on, sometimes before a camera is even announced. This guarantees your spot before the masses even know about the camera.
