Did you end up with the Deuter? This looks to be a great backpack. The main advantage of the PGYTech over all of these backpacks is the side access. But the comfort is questionable if you are already using a hiking backpack. It looks infinitely more interesting than the new Peak Design photo/hiking hybrid backpack.

No I returned the Deuter.
Nice backpack, but too small for my torso length. The shoulder straps are also not height adjustable.
Because it was too small I wasn't able to transfer the weight to my hips. The backpack was constantly pulling me back at the shoulders.
I ended up with a Gregory Zulu 40. If I need something slightly bigger I'd also get a 55. It's just amazingly comfortable and also has the front access which was a must for my camera gear.
Almost all weight goes to my hips, making my gear feel much lighter. I love how the hip belt of the Gregory feels. It "hugs" my back very nicely.

BTW: I currently use an Osprey camera cube
These are fairly new on the market and I like it (I also have Shimoda and Peak Design V2 cubes).
I like that the shell feels a but more firm.

You can cinch down your pack with the compression straps to whichever depth you want. The new PD backpack has no new features catering to comfort, IMO.

I suppose with the PGYTECH bag underpacked could be flattened a lot but their camera cube already 17cm. Might have to use different 3rd party cube unit for more strict airlines.

New PD outdoor line seems to be borrowing harness design from Mystery Ranch & Shimoda adjustability. Looks more comfortable than their existing everday line straps.

maybe someday, hope you find that "just right" one. i will be trucking around with mine essentially as a haul bag for the next few days.

Ended up selecting the Gregory Zulu 45. Debating whether to also keep the Zulu 55 for 2-3 day outings. As others have mentioned, I love how their hip belt hugs your lower back. I have a 90L Gregory Baltoro Pro that I have hiked with loaded to 55 lbs for a week long photography backpacking trip. At $250 total for both you can't go wrong.

Sent back both MR packs. They are good packs but don't feel as nice on my body as the Gregory's. Really wanted to keep the Coulee 40, that triple zip is pure genius, but ultimately the ICU sank too deep below the opening of the zipper which would have made it impractical.

Exactly. It's nice that they now use a metal frame and adjustable shoulder straps (just like Shimoda), but that's about it.
It even has a very minimal hip belt, just to be able to be stowed away.

They are also saying this on their kickstarter page: "Bulky, gimmicky suspensions may look cool, but true comfort comes from proper fit."

... I guess Osprey, Gregory, Deuter,... and all other outdoor backpack brands must be doing something wrong.

Based on your suggestion, I ordered the Osprey Medium Camera Cube which arrived today (significant discount on Amazon). This cube is going to solve some of my challenges. Because of its tapered design, it easily slips into my MR Scree 32 pack (the Large F-Stop ICU takes effort to squeeze it in. This cube fits my OM-1, Oly 150-400 (not mounted on the body), Oly 12-100, and Oly 40-150 f2.8 so I expect it will be good solution for photographing birds/wildlife with my OM setup. Of course, I'll need to field test it. I also ordered the Gregory Zulu 40 which I found on clearance so I'm looking forward to testing that when it arrives.

I'm going to test out how the Osprey Camera Cube fits my FF gear as well. I'm wondering if Osprey will release a large size for FF telephotos. They'll probably wait and see how these new camera accessories perform in the market.

Great to see Osprey entering photography space
We need better competition with quality bags and new ideas. We need old brands like f-stop and Shimoda, but they need to come with better ideas and lower prices with quality bags.

Didn't back the kickstarter but ordered a OnePro Flex 40L last week. AMZN delivered yesterday which is kinda funny as some of the backers haven't gotten theirs yet.

Here are my quick first day impression:

  • Feel/Layout is very similar to Shimoda but with TMP back.
  • Comfort wise similar to Shimoda with a load. Obviously cooler back.
  • TMP isn't as taut but still functional. Mesh ends at lower back before waist belt unlike the full wrapping Osprey does.
  • Torso length adjustment just held by webbing. Unsure of durability. Wish it was easily interchangeable.
  • Top shoulder yolk bridge area is less structured. Bows inward poking at my back when pack not loaded down.
  • Harness straps firmer than Shimoda. Doesn't have soft beveled edges like Osprey but more rectangular feel like most outdoor packs.
  • Harness straps also bit wide. Doesn't taper thinner towards arm pit. Might not fit well with women physique. Spouse said Shimoda women specific straps felt better around neck/bust.
  • Magnetic security latch easy on/off. Better than expected. Kinda fun to fiddle/fidget at. Handy to have rear unzipped but still secured close.
  • Top expansion brain seems better than Shimoda roll top design. Bit flappy when not expanded for internal usage.
  • Lots of webbing for capture clips which is handy
  • Camera cube insert is very rigid/solid similar to Shimoda's core unit. Has a zippered top which is better than Shimoda's sleeve pouch which can't be carried with straps.
  • Pack height is under carry-on limit. However, depth might not be, but could be compressed down. Lower profile 3rd party insert cube could be used too for less depth. Insert included is deeper than most.

    My comfort ranking

  • Osprey Atmos/Exos (10/10)
  • Mystery Ranch Bridger (9.5/10)
  • Osprey Exos (9/10)
  • Gregory Baltro (8.5/10)
  • Osprey Stratos (8.5/10)
  • Gregory Zulu (8/10)
  • Mystery Ranch Scree/Radix/Coulee (8/10)
  • PGYTECH OnePro (8/10)
  • Shimoda Action/Explore (7.5/10)
  • Osprey Farpoint (7.5/10)
  • MindShift Gear BackLight (7.5/10)
  • Wandrd Prvke (7/10)
  • Lowepro Fastpack BP (6.5/10)
  • Peak Design Everyday/Travel (5/10)

Thank you for the review. So it is not a bad effort from PGYTech on that first try.
