Might be a silly question but it's relevant to me this week.
Is it safe to hang from the 6D Mark II an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Mark II lens? Rather than tether it at the tripod collar like I've always done?
I'm going to be wearing a Cotton Carrier vest and I will have that lens with that camera. I'm concerned about damaging the camera so I was planning to attach the mounting hardware to the tripod foot and put that on the vest, and put no stress on the camera. But when I'm looking through their instructions, they have a dSLR with a 70-200 2.8 lens hanging from the camera!

That's the old F/4 version in that photo which is lighter but you shouldn't have an issue with the 70-200II as I've hung those from many bodies in the 5D line with no problems. It's no different from just hanging the lens/body from your hand/fingertips on the grip of the body.

Yes, it is safe.

If the lens has its own strap lugs, I use them; otherwise, it hangs off the mount (as designed). I regularly use the 70-200/2.8L IS II and 100-400L IS II on cameras from the M5 through 1D-series. Never an issue, unless a drop is involved. I find that a bit of gaffers tape (1 1/2" x 1/4") applied along the hood/lens joint, greatly reduces the number of times that I have to buy new hoods.

It's probably considered safe I doubt I'd do it though on a 3+ lb lens

I had the 6DII and used it with the 100-400 II quite a bit. It is safe. I've hung that 3 1/2 lb lens from SL Rebels without issue.

I've always let my RF 100-500 hang from my R5 without issue and the EF 100-400 on various other bodies before that. I have also very briefly and gingerly hung my EF 500 f/4 II off my R5 but I use extreme caution when doing so in those rare events.
About 6 months ago my RF 100-500 suddenly came off the R5 as I was walking around. Fortunately I have a habit of putting a finger or two on the tripod foot (always rotated to the top) as I walk around just to keep the rig from flopping around while using a shoulder strap. I just barely had enough fingers on the foot when it popped off the camera and caught it before it fell to the ground.
I have no idea how this happened but it certainly made a particular body part pucker very quickly.
Now I frequently check them by giving them a quick twist.

I generally shoot events with two cameras. I used to work with classic Domke straps and various Domke shoulder bags. I have hung the 70-200 off of the 6D and various 5-series bodies without issue this way.

However, at some point about 10 years ago I gave up the shoulder bag and transitioned to using the Black Rapid Dual camera harness. Now the larger zoom lenses with tripod collars bear the weight rather than the camera mount.

I confess this does give me more confidence.

Interesting you mention that, it happened to me twice this year. I thought it was my canon rf-ef adapter. Once i was positioning my ef 500 on a fence, luckily i was holding the lens properly, a guy next to me giggled and said “that would have been an expensive accident”.

I wonder if some r5 have a weaker mount than others.

If Canon doesn't give any warnings against it either in the Camera, or specific lens manual, it's likely safe, but if the lens has a Tripod Mount, that's my preferred hanging attach point.

Was okay in my experience even with the 650D, then 80D. And 6DII should be about the same as the 80 as far as build quality goes.

I did that with 70-200 ver.1 and 100-400 ver.1. But the weight is in the same ballpark with 70-200 ver.2 anyway.

I don't think it's due to a weak mount or else it would happen frequently. And it feels very snug when properly locked in.
This was the first and only time in 4 years with the R5 that this had ever happened. I must have not completely locked it in to begin with or bumped the release button somehow.
That's my suspicion at least.

That's what I thought: user error, but it happened to me twice in a row within a month. on the other end in many years of EF use it never happened and then I read of your experience and I became more suspicious about the locking mechanism not being 100% reliable.

I think you're safe with Canon. Their super teles used to be over 6kg.
Compare to Sony who's first super teles were 3kg.
Nobody ever offered an after market (stronger) lens mount for Canon. Not so Sony.
I think most of the waffle about the advantages of a large diameter mount are just that, waffle.
It's a basic engineering principle though that a larger diameter mount has strength advantages.
So canon has a large diameter mount and years of experience with much heavier tham modern lens weights.
The v3 EF TCs, had extra screws attaching the mount rings. Canon said this wss to increase strength.

Simply, this is an area Canon has a lot of experience with.

I had to get a Sony A9 repaired after a drop. A drop that really should have done some damage.
My repair tech had to replace the mount on the body. I asked if it was possible the actual body could have been bent.
He said he had yet to see any detectable bending of a Sony body and that they're very strong.
I reckon Canon would know a bit about that too.

I can report that I had both the 24-105mm f/4L IS Mark II and the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Mark II hanging from the R6II at different times for most of the day yesterday and encountered no issues.

Like any system with moving parts, it's worth performing a few maintenance checks, every once in a while. I check screw tightness in three areas (or respond when I notice something is loose); (i) lens mount screws, (ii) camera mount screws, and (iii) lens body screws. The last are often located under the focus or zoom ring (which you have to peel back for access), and lead to lens weirdness, when they get a bit loose.
