Hi All,

I know there are other threads talking about this and we can do a home mod, but does anyone know if a company has released an EF-RF adapter that will take the RF teleconverters straight out of the box?

I don’t think Canon would allow that. You have to file down one of the adapters, it’s pretty easy to do. Works great.

For me it's a bit of a puzzle as to why they disallowed this in the first place, given that the people who are doing the workarounds do not seem to be experiencing any issues. The RF teleconverters seem to handle the EF protocols well enough.

I'm wondering if they just designed it this way on principle, or if there are some edge cases we don't know about.

I wonder what the lens information written into Exif looks like? Is the combination of the EF lens and RF teleconverter correctly identified?

From memory I don’t think it does but I’m not sure. I will be back in town next weekend and I will post some examples unless someone else beats me to it.

The EXIF shows the presence of the RF TC. However, it does not report the one stop loss of the RF 1.4X TC, or the 2 stop loss of the RF 2X TC

I modified a Canon drop-in filter adapter. I can fit the RF 2x into it but the 1.4x will not. Perhaps more filing is needed.

As said above, the EXIF is incorrect. My 400 DO II with RF 2x starts at f/4 instead of f/8, so you need to keep that in mind.

Is there any noticeable IQ or AF speed advantages to hacking an adapter to use the RF TC's?

I have both EF and RF TC's so I've never bothered, but if there is an advantage then I might consider it for use with my 500 II.

I haven't looked into this, but where do you put the mount converter (MC)? The TC should be on the body, right? Then the MC should be between the TC and the EF lens. Then the TC should should not even obstruct the rear elements of the TC-incompatible EF lens, because it is inside the MC...?

I wonder if that would work on FD lenses using the FD to RF adapter? No communication between the lens and camera, but maybe a sharper image instead of using an FD tc.

There have been "chipped" mount adapters for converting various manual focus lens mounts to Canon EF for a long time. Canon FD has never been supported to my knowledge because of the unfortunate lack of infinity focus when converted to EF.

But it would be cool if someone would adapt this in an FD to RF mount. Being able to use FD lenses with exif information passed through to the camera body would be pretty neat.

I modified a COMMLITE CM-EF-EOSR VCPL using the RF 1.4X TC as a guide, and found out that there is no problem fitting the RF 2X.

I almost forgot: I had to replace the Variable CPL with a dummy cover : "JJC LC-CARFC" adapter cap. Here is the link from Amazon:

Yes, here's the most inexpensive way ($48.95) to do it for anyone wondering;

I also wanted to try it with my 600 II, but after finding the following test, decided not to bother. According to the comparision, both RF 1.4X and RF 2X perform worse than their EF version III counterparts.

Keep in mind that the filter adapters are a different physical length than the non-filter adapters to compensate for the extra glass in the optical path. On some lenses you'll lose infinity focus when you don't have a filter (be it the VND, CPL or clear one) installed. It's about a millimeter of difference in the length (or thickness) between the adapters.

Very nice indeed. The EF Sigma 100-400 OS Contemporary on RF suddendly looks more attractive!

I used the Commlite CM-EF-EOS R ARC - Canon EF / Canon RF with controlring. I milled the inside larger until the RF1.4 and RF2.0 fitted.

EF 100-400 L2 and RF1.4 worked just as well as the EF 100-400 with EF1.4 III. Unfortunately I don't have the EF2.0 III.

But the battery of the R6 was completely drained overnight with the combination EF 100-400 L2 and RF1.4 or RF2.0 attached.
Even when the camera was switched off!
So EF 100-400 L2 and EF1.4 III had to go and were replaced by RF 100-500 L.

I have also modified a Viltrox adapter and obtained the same focus accuracy like the Commlite.
I think the loss of focus infinity on the COMMLITE may happen with wide angle lenses, especially those with hard infinity stop.
(UN) fortunately, I no longer have any EF wide angle lens where this maybe a problem

I don't see much difference between just the EF and just the RF.

I just got back in town and did some testing between the RF 2x and EF 2xIII and I can't see a difference between the two setups.

Ah very good. I do have EF 1.4x III, was wondering whether I shall buy also 2x, but now the RF 2x seems a bit more usable even with higher price tag, as it can teleconvert an EF lens which is otherwise TC incompatible, e.g. I can carry the 70-300 DO IS or Sigma 100-400 Contemporary and have a small and light TC to double their reach at the cost of the lower quality as a backu[.

I could basically turn the Sigma into a poor man's RF800/11 while not carrying it as additional volume/weight.
