p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Going to Supercon next weekend...which lens would you take?

I haven't been to a comic convention in a few years. Going next Saturday to Florida Supercon 2024. My plan is to take two camera bodies (R6II and 6DII) using the Cotton camera carrier vest. For sure one camera will have the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II (probably the 6DII). But I'm undecided on what I should take as second lens. Initially I was going to take the EF 24-105 f/4L IS II and have coverage from 24 to 200 with IS. But now that I purchased the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art, I'm doubting which is a better choice. The 24-105 obviously has the benefit of the zoom range and IS. But at f/4 it is pretty slow for indoor photos. The Sigma has the benefit of the very wide aperture and excellent IQ, but it would leave me with no coverage from 25-69mm and has no IS.

I CAN and probably will bring a Godox V1c speedlight. So I can pair that with the 24-105 to supplement the light. Also if I pair it with the R6II I can use Auto ISO without much concern. If I pair the Sigma with the R6II I can rely on IBIS to make up for the lack of lens IS.

So what do you think? Will I miss the 25-69mm range and IS? Or will I benefit significantly from the 1.4 from the Sigma?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Sample picture from prior convention for attention

I think I have two of his pictures, one from ComicCon and another from some renaissance fair. I asked this same question when I was going to my first ComicCon. The correct answer was a 24-105 on a FF camera. Been using that for years now. Enjoy! Take your 70-200 if you feel the need. Never felt the need for flash.

Is this for professional work? If so, I'd say go with the 24-105 f/4L.

If this is for personal work, I'd say go with whatever "speaks" to you. That said, I'm not sure how useful a wide angle will be at the convention. I feel like most convention photos I see are portraits of the cosplayers and portraits of the media personalities at panels. That is to say, long lenses are the best bet.

This is for fun. Just a hobby. I was thinking the 24mm for group photos but you're right. I still have the 24mm on the zoom.

Yes, I'll add that for the panels the 70-200 f4 was perfect. i have a great photo from a Castle panel of Nathan Filian noticing Molly Quinn wearing the Mal Reynolds costume from Firefly. Too geeky?

BTW, two weeks til ComicCon - this time with the R5.

No such thing as too geeky. I'm a huge Firefly fan and have been particularly enamored with Jewel Staite both from Firefly and from her parts in the Stargate franchise. We also love Doctor Who and have met a few doctors and several of the companions. The highlight of next week's Supercon for us is finally meeting with and photographing with David Tennant, who is "our" Doctor.

Back to Firefly, my plan is to wear a Firefly t-shirt that says "Shiny" under the camera vest in case I take it off, paired with an excellent replica of Jayne's hat that I've had now for 10 years and 2 days (got it at Supercon 2014 on July 4). Picture attached with the lady that made it. That picture was before the LASIK and the beard.

My wife made a recreation of Kaylee's vest and embroidered "My daughter is a mechanic on a Firefly" on the back. Her regular ComicCon uniform. It's been autographed by several of the cast. She also knitted several Jayne hats. She and our daughter are the real geeks, not me, I'm just the photographer. I enjoy it because its my only opportunity for portrait photography with cooperative subjects.

24mm is too wide and easy to get perspective distortion, a big problem on people. So if you like 24mm take it but I'm not sure if I'd take it.

Even 50mm it's hard to get anything oof. I've seen it done but prefer 85+

2nd EF 24-105mm f/4L. Have used in similar situation many times - with either an 80D or more often a 5DIV. Excellent results. Would love to see some pix.

Photos in general? I can link you to a blog post I made back in 2016 and/or to some of my galleries. Or if you want of this year's Supercon, i'll post those sometime after the convention
