I am currently shooting with the R6 and mostly using the 28-70/2.8 lens. Sometimes I want something a bit smaller and more incognito to be able to take out with the family and friends.

Curious to hear people's thoughts on the Leica Q3, Hasselblad X2D or Fuji X100V? Would still like relatively quick auto focus and eye tracking for the kids and wife when they are moving around and not just posing, but was thinking something like the Q3 or X2D, X100V would be interesting options to try. Thoughts?

If you want a fixed focal length, the X100V is a great little camera. The AF won't measure up to the R6 but it's decent especially if using eye tracking. If you want interchangeable, the X-T5 is a great way to go especially when paired with their smaller older primes like the 35/1.4. You can get faster AF in the newer lenses and in the f/2 "Fujicrons" which are quite small, light, and affordable as well. I highly recommend looking more closely at Fuji not just for your wallet's sake, but because the images I took with Fuji cameras over the last 8 years really stuck with me, and I'd still be a Fuji main if I didn't lean so heavily into landscape in the last couple years.

If you want the flexibility of an ILC that is compact but also has great image quality and excellent AF with eye tracking, I might suggest the EOS R8 with one or two lenses like the RF 28mm f/2.8 and RF 50mm f/1.8.

I second this, but I'd probably also throw the 35mm f/1.8 in as a decent (albeit larger) contender.

The 28mm pancake on the RP/R8 is TINY.

So FF and f2.8 is it for you? My G1X3 weighs 1 lb, is APS-C, 24 MP, and covers 24-70 with excellent IQ albeit f2.8-f5.6. Sadly it's out of production. The R7/R10 with 18-150 will give you excellent IQ if you let it. Or pay big bucks for a Leica or carry a slug'o primes. This is not your high end R6 pro camera. You can always use that.

My R6II stays home whenever I travel. My two favorites are a Sony A7c with a Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 and an OM System OM-5 with Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 X. The OM-5 replaced my Ricoh GRIII. Here's a pic of them side by side for comparison...

For what you'd spend on the Q or Hassy, get a used Leica M10 and put a Voigltander 35/2 or 35/1.4 on it. It's small enough yet feels like a real camera, you know, all metal, the way they all used to be made.

This will truly 'give you something different' to play around with and test your skills as a photographer with a system that lacks auto-everything to cover your butt when you screw up.

AF is overrated.

My bias is that Hasselblad and Leica are more costly for what you get than necessary. I have a lot of experience with Fujifilm, having adopted the x-trans platform for my “other system” (I also use a FF Canon system) for travel and street photography. Over the years I have owned or used two of the XE cameras (XE1 and XE3), the X100f (briefly), the XPro2 and XT5 (both extensively)… with a variety of Fujifilm lenses.

When I used the X100f (a predecessor to the current X100vi) I was very impressed with it in many ways, but I decided that it wasn’t for me, as I prefer to not be limited to just the 35mm focal length. (Or to use the add-on adapters.) If you are sure that a single 23mm (FF equivalent 35mm) fixed lens will do it for you, this could be a viable solution. Though you’ll have to pay — that camera is in very short supply right now.

There are other Fujifilm cameras that are just as good and which accommodate interchangeable lenses and, obviously, zooms like the one you use now. If you can find one of the tiny XE models (XE4 is ideal, though XE3 is good, too), they are very small but excellent. If you want a very small package put the tiny 27mm f/2.8 on it and it is smaller and lighter than the X100vi. Depending on what you are trying to do and your priorities, there are a few zoom lens options that could work, too.

I’m currently using the XT5, which is a really first rate camera, especially if you like The small size and manual controls.

As to the single, fixed-lens options, as a zoom user you really need to make sure that you’d be happy with that. It is possible, but it isn’t for everyone.

^ The Q3's fixed lens isn't really a limitation for the casual kind of shooting suggested by the OP. Leica conveniently includes other common focal length as crop options. Of course you're cropping into the image area and all the related tradeoffs that brings, but starting with 60MP at 28mm, you're down to 19MP at 50mm, which is still roughly equivalent resolution to what you'd get out of an APS-C system. Crops available: 35, 50, 70 and 90mm (39, 19, 8 and 6MP).

@amiletich you should cross-post this to the Leica/alternative board where you'll get more feedback from users of the Q and Hasselblad systems. Maybe @flash will comment. I believe he owns all of the options you're considering.

Canon has lighter lenses, maybe 28 Rf on your R6 or get RP or R8. I'd think 28 or 35/1.8 on the R6 beats the X100V. Are you willing to do a major crop to get to 50mm+ on the Q3?

The R100 + 18-50/2.8 Sigma that's set to come out in Rf mount is probably lighter than the 28-70/2.8 (or is it 24-70/2.8?)

Why jump to another system with no sharing of lenses and accessories? Get the R50 with a small prime or zoom, e.g., RF 24 1.8 Macro IS STM or RF-S 18-150 IS STM. Or just get a smaller lens for the R6. The RF 24-70 2.8L (or 28-70 2.0L?)is a dad burn boat anchor and a small prime or zoom would transform the R6 to a wee and seek casino/dinner cam.

I usually just put 18-55 on something like SL2 Rebel, often taking a large flash to bounce (which you might not want to do but pop up flash isnt bad,) going to a holiday dinner or something. I'll often shoot Raw+jpeg so I can run it through lens corrections in DPP if needed. LV has DPAF, could use 24 pancake etc too

Yes, Canon has lots of really light options. You certainly don't have to go to a different brand

I have the X2D and Q3. No R6 but R5 and R7 (which i hate). So I can compare, I think.

What are you trying to change, really? The X2D with a 38 or 55 isn't really much smaller than an R6 with a decent prime. The Q3 is faster but has that fixed lens. You need to like 28 or be prepared to crop a bit. It's generally quick enough for most casual shooting but a sports camera it 'aint. Really all the options you've listed are great but for a more *considered* approach than an R6 style camera. The Q3 also has the same resolution (approx) as the X100VI at 35mm crop and the same aperture. So you get a wide lens with the Q3 and a free X100 style camera thrown in. And mostly, you can buy one.

The IBIS on the X2D is spectacular though. 100MP at 1/6th a second. No worries.

Alll the cameras you mention have one thing in common. They're *less than* current modern computers with lenses. Is that what tempts you? If it is go for it. I agree. But if you're just chasing size and want the top AF etc then the only option is the Sony A7CR. Fun little camera but I never use it in preference to my Q3 or X2D because they are *less* and less is more, sometimes.

The 'blad and Q3 are just so much fun to use. I guess the 100VI is as well. You won't get every shot, every time. That's kind of the point. I get that sometimes it's nice to have the best performance. But usually, I'll choose the better user experience. Most do it all cameras don't inspire me much. I'd rather have a bag of scalpels than one Swiss army knife.

The X2D is ~2 lbs. I didn't mention it because it doesn't strike me as a smaller incognito camera, if that's the goal.

The RP is lighter than the A7C, thinking R8 is too. Canon has a lot of lightweight gear these days, actually has for a long time. I've used 18-55 on a Rebel at <1/4, even though it probably doesn't have the best IS, good though

I'm sure the Q3 is nice, but you're basically cropping to m4/3 to get to 50mm. Might be better off just adding 5-6 oz 50/1.8 to your R6

simple answer, like really simple- R7 or R10 (or R50 lol) with Sigma 18-50/2.8.... Smaller body and smaller lens, similar coverage. You'd lose (IB)IS unless you get the R7 which at that point isn't a WHOLE lot smaller, but it would be lighter for sure.

R8 with any of the small primes is great, but having shot an R8 for the last 6 months, I will say I kinda hate that EVF. It's small enough and I think also something with the FPS, that almost every time I use it, my eye would start to get irritated, and I have 20/20 LASIK corrected vision. Most other modern EVF are no issue for me, but damn near every time I use the R8, my shooting eye starts bothering me. The R6 and R7 have MUCH nicer EVF.

Fuji X100V or VI are awesome but very limited- as long as you understand that and are ok with it, they are great cameras. Any Leica option is cool so long as you can afford it and don't mind the quality control lottery that they have seemed to become. Fuji QC is great, as is Canon these days.

Sony a7C. Used one for a week and the smaller size pair with say a 35 or 50mm 1.4 GM was spot on. Used my Canon R6 and 35mm 1.8 is for a bit but found the focus speed on the lens was too slow.

I have to agree. I have been using the R8 with the 50 and it's been a joy to carry.
